Science and Technology have a prima role to play in African Continent in its overall development. Africa being one of the world’s richest regions in terms of Natural Resources, great agricultural capacity and man-power; this brings to us the need for using various areas of sciences at large.

Africa has a pool of talent in diverse fields of research that is moving ahead. The field of Geo-Spatial sciences is no exception and many minds working for achieving the objectives they have set for the development of this region.

GISDevelopment is a GIS Media organisation whose aim is to promote the Geo-Spatial technologies through print/ online publications and conferences. As a part of this we have recently started a GIS Quarterly publication called GISDevelopment Africa. In parallel we are organising Map Africa 2006- The Annual International Conference and Exhibition on Geospatial science, Technology and Applications scheduled to be held from 20 - 22 November 2006 at Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.

We are glad in bringing to your notice that Space Application Centre (CSIR), Pretoria, South Africa and Department of Land Affairs, South Africa are our Principal Sponsors .We also have Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and International Cartography Association (ICA), NATIONAL SPACE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (NASRDA), Kenya as Co-Sponsors for this convention.

Map Africa 2006 would provide a platform to all stakeholders - Researchers, Users, Technology Developers, and Policy Makers to discuss, deliberate, exchange knowledge, experiences and collaborate for benefit of all in the Geospatial domain.

Map Africa will attempt to facilitate interaction, discussion, and collaboration amongst the participants. It provides a platform to share the latest developments in the field and also promote the products and services to a large gathering of about 500 people. The profile of the participants include top decision makers from government and private sectors, existing as well as prospective users, academicians, vendors, policy makers and representatives of various international organizations working for promoting the cause of this technology. link
