December 6, 2006 - East View Cartographic (EVC) today announced the completion of a project to create 30m digital elevation models (DEMs) above 60 degrees north latitude, including coverage of the Akureyri Airport in Iceland.
The ability to supply digital elevation models derived from authoritative topographic maps fills a significant gap in worldwide DEM coverage, since the widely available SRTM90 DEM data covers only about 80 percent of the globe. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), which did not collect data above 60 degrees north nor below 56 degrees south latitudes, does not provide DEM data for much of Russia, Scandinavia, or Iceland.
The 30 meter DEM of Iceland covers 3,600 square kilometers and is derived from 1:50,000 scale maps. It was produced for the avionics division of Honeywell, who needed a detailed 3D model of the Akureyri Airport and environs for their terrain avoidance systems.
EVC has supplied DEMs above 60 degrees north latitude for clients such as leading suppliers of navigation systems, makers of advanced flight electronics, providers of training and simulation systems, and geospatial service companies requiring DEMs to produce orthorectified imagery. EVC has created 30m, 50m, and 90m DEMs from a variety of topographic map sources and inventories an extensive collection of worldwide topographic maps used in these projects.
