Temporal Analysis of Crime

CDR Group announced a new business arrangement with Portolan Technology of Australia to sell their HS_Gridder for MapInfo product.

Initially developed for Victoria Police, HS_Gridder is a MapBasic tool to assist with the spatial and temporal analysis of crime locations within MapInfo Professional. The tool was designed with speed and ease of use in mind for identifying crime hotspots but can be used equally as well for other point datasets.

The program uses kernel density methods to identify and map crime hotspots (clustering). There are a number of options to generate hotspots, including the ability to view the hotspots only or a full surface depiction. The output is provided in a MapInfo grid file (.mig), which is typically a very small file size, and can be made to appear translucent in the map window. HS_Gridder also performs temporal analysis on crime data, counting records by day of week, hour of day, or a combination of these. It uses the aoristic method when analysing times, so that ‘From’ and ‘To’ times are considered and output is given in graphs and charts.
