Around 38 percent of Germany’s households are classified as single-person. With close to one out of every two inhabitants fitting this profile, Berlin, Bremerhaven and Hamburg have Germany’s highest percentage of single-member households. Berlin is the country’s singles capital, with 51% of residents living in one-person domiciles.
Germany’s cities and counties with the highest percentage of single-person households also include Regensburg, Braunschweig, Munich, Trier, Aachen and Leipzig.
Predominantly rural areas tend to have significantly fewer single-person households. Cloppenburg County in Lower Saxony is the extreme in this regard. With 29% of the population living in single-member households, this region is well below the national average. Other areas significantly below the national average include counties Vechta, Landshut, Borken and Straubing-Bogen.
GfK GeoMarketing provides a digital map illustrating the national distribution of single-person households (data source: GfK GeoMarketing, 2007 GfK Demographics).
