Online Remote Sensing and GIS Programs at Northeastern University

College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University is offering three online programs in remote sensing and GIS. The curriculum can be found at the following pages:

- Graduate Remote Sensing Certificate

- Masters in GIT

- Graduate GIS Certificate

Students have the opportunity to work with ESRI GIS software and ENVI and PCI Geomatica remote sensing software, in addition to learning about open source software. Instructors have extensive experience in their respective fields and are highly qualified individuals. Our programs are entirely online, thus are available to international students also. We offer internship for credit opportunities, access to all the software via a virtual lab environment, and new courses on a routine basis. Look out for "Remote Sensing for Disaster Management; Automated and assisted feature extraction techniques using remote sensing data; and GIS for Crime Mapping and Statistics" to be offered over the next year. Fall classes start on September 12th.

Top Geography Program Goes to Clark University

The doctorate program at the Clark University Graduate School of Geography is top-ranked in the nation by the National Research Council (NRC).

In April, the NRC released an update to its Data-Based Assessment on Research Doctorate Programs in the United States, a complex and long-anticipated assessment first published in September 2010. Clark ranks at the top with UCLA, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Clark stands out among the 49 geography doctoral programs evaluated in the NRC report as the only top-10 department that is housed within a liberal arts research university, and as one of a small number of departments that sustains a balanced program of research and education across the full breadth of the discipline.

As the oldest, sustained doctoral program in Geography in the country, Clark Geography has granted the largest number of doctoral degrees in the United States and is consistently ranked among the top programs and sustains its reputation in various polls and peer-review rankings.

Clark Geography faculty and students have established themselves as global leaders in innovative, theory-driven research spanning geography's subfields (urban-economic, human-environment, earth-system sciences, Geographic Information Science). Clark's new president, David Angel, is an economic geographer.

Clark doctoral alumni achieve prominent academic and senior non-academic research positions (e.g., NASA). Many international alumni hold important government positions in their home countries (e.g., European Commission) or with non-profit organizations (e.g., National Coffee Growers' Federation in Colombia).

Clark University is a teaching and research institution founded in 1887 as the first all-graduate school in the United States. Until Clark instituted undergraduate programs in 1902, the university offered only Ph.D. granting programs. Clark is also one of the oldest universities to offer formal graduate programs, second only to Johns Hopkins University.

The NRC assessment is based on a variety of data, including faculty research funding, publications, faculty composition, program size, and others. The doctoral programs assessed were scored within two major categories: peer-to-peer survey assessment and objective categories. The updated NRC report also ranks Clark University among the top in a number of objective categories, including percentage of students with external fellowships, average number of Ph.D. graduates, percentage of international students, diversity, faculty performance and awards, research activity and citations per faculty publication.

Featured University: Selkirk College GIS Program

Geographic Information Systems training at Selkirk College prepares individuals to be trained geospatial experts in the environmental planning, business, industry and resource sectors. Masters in GIS at Wageningen University Gets Recognized

The Master Geo-information Science (MSc Geo-Info) at Wageningen University has been evaluated by the Keuzegids Master 2011, as the best study in the category (rural) planning. The Keuzegids evaluates the quality of 600 Master studies at the Dutch universities. The guide helps future students with their choice by comparing the different Master studies on quality aspects.

In the category (rural) planning, the Master Geo-information Science scores the best at all criteria (ranging from study content to facilities and contact), with a total score of 80.

Featured GIS University: Boston University Geography and Environment

The Department of Geography and Environment offers graduate training emphasizing both theory and application. Research foci include both natural and social sciences, with emphasis on quantitative methods. Analytical rigor provides graduates with flexibility for choosing careers in academics and government; in environmental, economic, and resource-analysis; in remote sensing and GIS; and with research institutes, consulting firms and international organizations.

Graduate students in the department work closely with faculty to develop their theses, which typically focus one of four research foci: (1) energy-environmental systems and policy; (2) economic geography and transportation studies; (3) remote sensing and geographic information systems; and (4) physical geography emphasizing biogeography, biophysical ecology, climatology and hydrology. Student research typically builds upon faculty research interests and funding, which provides students with opportunities to work on cutting-edge research, and to participate in national and international research communities by attending and participating in scientific meetings and workshops.

Opportunities exist in the department for graduate student participation in a vibrant externally supported research program. Faculty are engaged in research sponsored by such agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Park Service, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the World Bank, and the United Nations.

The department is very supportive of interdisciplinary studies and maintains strong linkages with faculty in many departments and units within the University including the Departments of Biology, Earth Sciences, and International Relations, as well as the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, the Center for Transportation Studies, the African Studies Center, the Center for Remote Sensing, and the Pardee Center.

Graduate Degree Programs
The Department offers both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Both degree programs combine rigorous coursework, theory, and application. Both degree programs require theses.

The department, through its close affiliation with the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies, also offers three non-thesis M.A. programs:

Featured GIS University: South Dakota State University - GIS Center of Excellence

The Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence (GIScCE) is a joint collaboration between South Dakota State University (SDSU) and the United States Geological Survey's National Center for Earth Resources Observation and Sciences (EROS). The purpose of the GIScCE is to enable South Dakota State University faculty and students, and EROS scientists to carry out collaborative research, seek professional development, and implement educational programs in the applications of geographic information science.
The idea for the GIScCE was formed and implemented by administrative leaders at SDSU, EROS, and the South Dakota State Board of Regents, and represents a unique partnership that strengthens both SDSU and EROS. EROS, a longtime collaborator with researchers at SDSU, is the largest civilian repository of remotely sensed data sets and a renowned center of applied earth systems science. In recognizing these strengths, a primary emphasis of the GIScCE will be the use of remotely sensed data sets to study the land surface and it's modification over time.

The GIScCE will employ the capabilities of geographic information science, namely remote sensing, geographic information systems, digital mapping, and geostatistics, to document and understand the changing earth. To fully achieve this, an interdisciplinary center of study is required, one which utilizes engineering principles to efficiently and accurately process earth observation data, geographic principles to create meaningful thematic depictions of land cover and land use change, and applications which focus on the resultant effects of change on the geosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere. To date, 13 researchers from SDSU and EROS have been recruited to constitute the GIScCE staff of Senior Scientists. By serving the South Dakota, national and international communities through the teaching and research investigations of the GIScCE staff, we expect SDSU to be recognized as a global center of expertise in geographic information science studies.
