GIS Day 2011 Date is November 16 in Canada

Celebrate GIS Day on November 16, 2011. Many of the questions we have about the world requires answering the question “where.” Knowing where something is leads to a better understanding of how its location influences its characteristics and relationships with other objects or beings in the environment. This type of analysis, known as geographic analysis, is enabled by geographic information system or GIS technology. GIS allows people to integrate numerous information and analyze it spatially on digital maps, helping them uncover new patterns and valuable insights for effectively addressing the world's economic, social, political and environmental problems. On Wednesday, November 16, 2011, participate in numerous events being held across Canada in celebration of GIS Day.

The University of Waterloo in Ontario is one of the first Canadian universities to use GIS throughout its organization. The University uses ESRI's GIS solution in teaching geography and geomatics, as well as other programs that focus on developing highly in-demand technology skills. It also uses GIS to improve school administration and student recruiting. It is one of only three Canadian universities that have been recognized as an ESRI Development Centre for providing exemplary programs that educate students in designing and developing applications using GIS. The University has developed an application called RPyGeo that integrates ESRI geoprocessing tools with the free R statistical computing software, allowing users to leverage geographic data in statistical analysis without the need for programming.

“GIS allows us to intersect various data and apply new perspectives to problems,” says Scott MacFarlane, GIS Specialist, University of Waterloo. “It's a valuable technology for improving learning and promoting innovation among our students. Using GIS, they're able to create applications that have real-world impact. It provides them with important skills that they can apply to a wide spectrum of challenges and contribute to a more sustainable society.”

Students at the University leverage GIS to develop innovative prototype applications for planning, environmental management and other concerns. They also use the technology to support research on a broad range of issues including how to make municipal transit more efficient; how to use GIS for business development; determine the health effects of living near wind turbines; monitor the spread and impact of invasive insect species; monitor the effects of marine oil spills; and tracking climate change.

This year, the University will hold a GIS Day open house to showcase its various GIS applications, including a new mobile campus map application that helps students and visitors to easily navigate the university and obtain better access to information and services.

In addition to the University of Waterloo, many other organizations across Canada are hosting GIS Day events. To find an event near you, visit esricanada.com/GISDay.

GIS Day Poster Competition Recognition Supported by URISA

Poster competitions are an excellent means of illustrating and testing how well students are able to demonstrate both research skills and communication skills. Many geography and GIS degree and certificate programs sponsor student poster competitions, particularly as part of their GIS Day events. GIS Day 2011 is Wednesday, November 16, 2011 and URISA is pleased to announce its support of GIS Day student poster competitions.

Recognition of GIS Day achievements is important to URISA. We look forward to receiving two types of contributions to support GIS Day Student Poster Competitions. First, we welcome receipt of GIS Day poster competition guidelines. There will no doubt be similarities and differences among the guidelines, and we look forward to presenting an informative and comprehensive display of the kinds of criteria which professors use to give directions to students, and to the judges who are evaluating the posters. We also welcome receipt of the posters that are selected as winning entries to promote the accomplishments of both the students and institutions.

It is expected that URISA’s GIS Day Student Poster Competition page will quickly become a very valuable GIS teaching and research resource, and we look forward to assisting professors, students, and competition judges as they plan their GIS Day activities. For further details, please visit the site.

In further recognition of the winning posters, URISA is pleased to provide one-year student memberships for the best poster in each category.

Integrated LIS on GIS Day

JOBURG is the first city in South Africa to have a single integrated property information system in place.

Known as the Land Information System (LIS), it brings together four different sources of information - the Deeds Office, Valuations, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the planning department - into one database.

All systems including billing now feed off this source making for improved revenue collection and service delivery for the City. But, more importantly, customer satisfaction levels should increase drastically as a result.

According to the director for the City’s Corporate Geo-Informatics directorate (CGIS), Marcelle Hattingh, this is the first time the City has a single view of the more than 680 000 City properties together with all land related information such as zoning and erf size.

Any new development applications must also be captured on the LIS database.

She was speaking during the annual international GIS day celebrations held on 19 November at the directorate’s offices in the Metro Centre, Braamfontein.

This year’s celebrations focussed on creating awareness among the public visiting the Metro Centre of the geo-informatics products and information available.

CGIS gives free training to internal and external clients on how to use the Online Maps Website at its premises.

GIS Day Canada on November 19, 2008

On November 19th, thousands of people around the world will celebrate the 10th annual GIS Day. GIS Day is an international grassroots event that promotes geographic literacy in schools, communities and organizations. GIS users will open their doors to students, co-workers, and the general public to showcase real-world applications at events happening across Canada ( www.esricanada.com/gisday). Games, open houses, lectures and a host of other activities will help engage people and create awareness about the important role geography plays in the decisions and actions of our governments, corporations and citizens around the world.

Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week, GIS Day is a global event that celebrates the technology and extends awareness of its important contributions in science, information and the humanities. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. The event is a reflection of the enthusiasm and commitment of individual GIS users everywhere. A number of Canadian government organizations, businesses, colleges and universities are taking part in this year’s GIS Day. Mark your calendar and attend an event in your area.
