Video Game That Uses Google Earth (VIDEO)

Geoception, Inc is doing a project that will utilize Google Earth and models from 3D Warehouse in a new video game!

What's the game about?
It is the near future, and Geoception, Inc is the world's leader in unmanned security systems. Using networks of combat drones in place of mercenaries, they have revolutionized private security contracting. Cities and nations, one by one, begin to see the cheap, efficient robotic policing services they provide as a God-send in hard economic times... in some cases, entirely removing the need for any human police in the city.

Google Earth Engine Team Stops by SDSU GIS Center

The Google Earth Engine team just finished their presentation at the South Dakota State University (SDSU) GIS Center of Excellence.

Rebecca Moore, Manager of Google Earth Outreach and Google Earth Engine, and Noel Gorelick, Software Engineer of Google Earth Engine, provided an overview of the image processing objectives and capabilities of the online tool.

Matt Hansen, the co-director of the Geographic Information Center at South Dakota State University (SDSU), is one of the partners of the project.

Other scientist partners include Greg Asner of the Carnegie Institution for Science, and developer Carlos Souza of Imazon.

New Google Maps Widget

There is a new Google Maps widget that has been added for accessing map types, layers and recently viewed searches. The widget will improve your experience in exploring and navigating the places you want to go.

Suppose you’re planning to meet your friend for a concert at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, and you want driving directions to plan your trip from your apartment in San Francisco. When accessing Google Maps, you’ll see a new widget in the upper right corner that allows you to easily select from either the Maps, satellite or Earth view. In addition, the single widget icon showcases all the different layers available to you, enabling you to quickly see more detailed information just by mousing over the ones you want.

Tracking Santa on Google Earth

Happy Holidays everyone! Let us have a little fun and join in tracking Santa on Google Earth today. The site called NORAD has been tracking Santa Claus since 1955. In the past two years or so, NORAD has been using Google maps and Google Earth.

Why NORAD track Santa
For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa’s flight.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations "hotline." The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born.

In 1958, the governments of Canada and the United States created a bi-national air defense command for North America called the North American Aerospace Defense Command, also known as NORAD, which then took on the tradition of tracking Santa.

Since that time, NORAD men, women, family and friends have selflessly volunteered their time to personally respond to phone calls and emails from children all around the world. In addition, we now track Santa using the internet. Millions of people who want to know Santa’s whereabouts now visit the NORAD Tracks Santa website.

Finally, media from all over the world rely on NORAD as a trusted source to provide updates on Santa’s journey.

Google Earth Engine Unveiled

Google Earth Engine is a new tool to give scientists, communities, and environmental activists with better access and understanding of climate change. Google unveiled the latest Labs project during the United Nations COP 16 conference today.

This new platform brings online for the first time an "unprecedented amount of satellite imagery and data" - the complete archive of more than 25 years of historical satellite imagery. This archive is on the terabyte scale, and few organizations have the storage or computing power to handle it. Therefore much of this information has up til now gone unused.

New Google Earth 6

Google has just introduced the newest version of Google Earth, Google Earth 6.

This latest incarnation follows last June's Google Earth 5.2 and adds three major updates to the virtual geographical tool: integrated Street View, 3D trees, and an improved historical imagery system.

While Street View was first introduced in 2008, the newest version integrates the up-close, photographic imagery of the original with the maps, satellite images and computerized renderings that characterize the birds-eye view. Though toggling between the different perspectives used to be more unwieldy, 6.0 allows the user to see when Street View is available by highlighting roads blue when the Pegman icon is dragged over the image. Apart from the new method of entering Street View, the Street View layer itself has been streamlined to allow easier navigation around the layer with mouse or arrow keys.

Earlier versions of Google Earth already rendered buildings in 3D, but 6.0 also adds 3D trees to the landscape. Not content to populate the virtual globe with the generic lollipop variety, Google Earth 6.0 actually includes highly detailed models for dozens of species of trees. They've already 'planted' 80 million trees in Athens, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Tokyo. Apart from helping the simulation's realism, Google is also working to model endangered forests in places like Brazil and Africa as a part of their Google Earth Outreach program.

The update to the historical imagery tool in Google Earth is minor, but helps draw attention to one of the program's most interesting features. Google Earth already had satellite and aerial imagery documenting recent disasters like the 2010 Haiti Earthquake before and after, as well as visions of London in 1945 and Warsaw in 1935, but the update makes it much easier to use the feature. Now, anytime a user is in an area where historical imagery is available, a pop-up appears in the bottom of the screen displaying the oldest possible date for the location.

China to counter Google Earth

[report] China’s State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) today unveiled a state-sanctioned and produced online world map, called simply “Map World” that an official predicted will, “In the near future, Map World will grow to be a famous Chinese brand for online map services with proven reliability.”

The map, “features images of satellite remote sensing with a resolution of 500 meters but this is enhanced to 2.5 meters for the Chinese map and 0.6 meters for maps of more than 300 Chinese cities” and uses satellite imagery taken from 2006 to 2010, and took two years to build, according to an SBSM official quoted in the story.

The announcement of the official government mapping service, which a deputy director of the SBSM said that, “All the mapping information has been permitted by the SBSM and related national security departments,” comes after China required private online mapping providers to apply for what is seemingly a strict license that comes with restrictions.

“Around 70 to 80″ licenses have been given out so far since the new regulations were put into place, and as of last month, Google still had not apparently submitted an application to offer Google Maps or Google Earth in China. With Google now severing search results on the Mainland from Hong Kong since earlier this year (as if you hadn’t heard), it is certainly within the realm of possibility that the world’s most used online mapping service does not have a future in China.

Google’s absence from the China market had been seen as possibly a window for Baidu and others to gain a strong hold (and Baidu and Nokia in particular have received licenses), but if the government pours a lot of resources into this project – and continues to make it freely available – it could conceivably at least slow down any private service from taking hold of the market as Google has in many parts of the world.

As far as Map World itself is concerned, the tile-based map is live right now (and has two URLs – tianditu.cn & chinaonmap.cn – which both go to the same page at the moment, but which we’re guessing in the future the second might go to an English site) and has a number of features, including links to separate websites for each of China’s provinces.

Aesthetically, the map reminds us of OpenStreetMap, but as far as how information is most likely added (and subtracted) from Map World, it probably couldn’t be further than the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap. Oh, and you’re best off visiting the site in Internet Explorer – and if you want to view the 3D view you’ll have to download a plugin – just remember, that’s a download from a Chinese government website...

Google Earth Kite Power

It has built up a massive global empire on the back of its high-tech credentials, but Google is enlisting the help of a small orange kite to capture some of the more remote regions featured on its popular Google Earth application.

A pair of sailors on a five-year odyssey around the world are taking the aerial images of coastal regions with their home-made kite on behalf of the technology giant, which has traditionally used satellite images on its maps.

As well as posting images to Google, husband and wife team Frank and Karen Taylor have also been plotting the progress of their journey on their Tahina Expedition website.

“Before we left on our sailing adventures, I made arrangements to provide Google with aerial photography using the kite so they could put the imagery in Google Earth. So, after taking the photos, they are processed and made part of the base imagery you see in Google Earth,” writes Frank.

“My primary objective is to take straight-down photos just like you see in Google Earth.”

Frank, who has been blogging about Google Earth for several years, is taking images using a combination of kite aerial photography and remote controlled aircraft.

“I have a special rig that hangs from the kite string below the kite to hold the camera. There is also a remote control that lets me control the orientation of the camera,” he writes.

The most recent images to be added to Google Earth site are shots from the Manihi atol in French Polynesia. Kite images from BBQ Island, near Panama already feature in the application.

Getting kite strings entangled in palm trees and poles, and having images spoiled by sunsets are just some of the obstacles Frank has had to overcome, but he said he hoped many aspects of the Tahina's voyage around the world be chronicled within Google Earth and Maps.

The Taylors departed North Carolina on November 14 last year and headed to the Caribbean. They are currently in Tonga, and plan to spend six months in New Zealand, from November 2010 to avoid the cyclone season in the south Pacific.

“Then we want to return to see more Pacific islands before heading to Australia. We also currently plan to visit Indonesia and Singapore, and Thailand,” he writes.

Frank said his kite photography was inspired by a series of high resolution aerial images taken by National Geographic in Africa that have now become a permanent part of Google Earth.

Dead Girl on Google Street View - Picture

There was a dead girl on Google Street View! False alarm. People browsing Google Street View and saw the image of the girl who looked dead sprawling on the road were worried why the Google Street View van driver didn't even stop to help.
It turned out that the nine-year-old Azura dropped down to the pavement and pretended to be dead to scare her friends. Google Street View cameras happened to be there at that moment and captured her prank.

Human Fossils Found Using Google Earth

This is via Google Earth blog. Today, scientists announced a new hominid fossil discovery in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site in South Africa. The discovery is one of the most significant palaeoanthropological discoveries in recent times, revealing at least two partial hominid skeletons in remarkable condition, dating to between 1.78 and 1.95 million years. We are especially excited because Google Earth played a role in its discovery.

So how did this come about? Back in March 2008, Professor Lee Berger from Witswatersrand University in Johannesburg started to use Google Earth to map various known caves and fossil deposits identified by him and his colleagues over the past several decades, as it seemed the ideal platform by which to share information with other scientists. In addition, he also used Google Earth to locate new fossil deposits by learning to identify what cave sites looked like in satellite images.

At the beginning of this project, there were approximately 130 known cave sites in the region and around 20 fossil deposits. With the help of the navigation facility and high-resolution satellite imagery in Google Earth, Professor Berger went on to find almost 500 previously unidentified caves and fossil sites, even though the area is one of the most explored in Africa. One of these fossil sites yielded the remarkable discovery of a new species, Australopithecus sediba. This species was an upright walker that shared many physical traits with the earliest known species of the genus homo — and its introduction into the fossil record might answer some key questions about our earliest ancestry in Africa.

We’re absolutely thrilled about this announcement, and delighted that our free mapping tools such as Google Earth and Google Maps continue to enable both individuals and distinguished scientists to explore and learn about their world. With these tools, places both foreign and familiar can be explored with the click of a mouse, allowing for new understandings of geography, topology, urbanism, development, architecture and the environment. Our efforts to organize the world’s geographic information are ongoing — but at the end of the day, seeing the way these tools are put to use is what most inspires us.

Google "Near Me Now"

Google's latest location-based feature for mobile devices, which went live recently, will make it easier to find restaurants, bars, ATMs and more when you're in an unfamiliar area, PC World reports. The feature, called "Near Me Now," is available on the Google homepage on your iPhone (OS 3.0 or later) and Android (OS 2.0.1 or later) devices. Near Me Now is currently available only for United States users, and was first announced in December, alongside other new mobile search features including Google Goggles.

Before you can use Near Me Now, you must allow Google to identify your location;, Google is not entirely clear on what this means, but I assume the search giant is talking about enabling its My Location feature. Once that's done, you will see your location and a "Near Me Now" link under the search box on the Google mobile homepage. If you click on the link, you'll see an expanded list of five categories: Explore Right Here (more about this later), Restaurants, Coffee Shops, Bars, and ATMs and Banks.

Then, you simply select the category to find a hotspot for lunch, the closest ATM, or the nearest place to grab a latte. With Near Me Now you can also drill deeper to find restaurant reviews, hours of operation, and contact information just as you can with Google Maps.

Google Earth iPhone application updated

Google Earth updates iPhone app. Version 2. The upgrade also adds 13 new languages to the mix, bringing a total of 31 supported languages.

The original app was introduced a year ago, and quickly raised to the top of the App Store charts. Like the ubiquitous desktop version, it allows to “fly” across the globe, touching down at the cities and locales chosen by user.

One can indulge in panoramic views or check out the rooftop of your childhood home, all courtesy of highly-detailed satellite images. You can tilt your iPhone to view hilly topography and take advantage of the iPhone's location services to zoom into your current position.

The big step forward for this edition of the app is the customized map feature. You can create these by using the My Maps interface on your computer. Google lets you take a satellite or map image and then add layers, which can include an itinerary, route lines, and other data. After you’ve saved the map, it becomes available on your phone.

Google, Microsoft, Yahoo sued over mapping software

Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and a dozen more US based companies that offer web based mapping applications are being sued by WebMap Technologies for infringement of a US patent called Method and Apparatus for Collecting and Expressing Geographically Referenced Data, says report.

The patent from 2004 was originally assigned to Cornell Research Foundation and National Audubon Society. The patent is an outcome of work done by the University and the society with regards to locating and plotting bird migrations.

WebMap Technologies is based in Frisco, TX and claims to be the only licensee of the patent. WebMap Tech alleges in the complaint that Google has known about the potential infringement for some time before the suit was filed. The plaintiff wants a permanent injunction enjoining defendants, damages, costs, expenses, interest, enhanced damages, attorneys' fees and other relief to which it may be entitled. The suite was filed Nov 3 2009.

If WebMap wins, it will mean a rather everyday and commonly done act of attaching a placemark on a web map if not done by paying the necessary royalties will be tagged as illegal.

Google Maps application, crowdsourced; Street View Data Erased

Google took additional measures to let users crowdsource its Google Maps application, allowing U.S. users to point out gaps in the search engine giant's Google Maps coverage. When users search and scan map results, they will see a "report a problem" link on the bottom right of a the map. Google Maps' Street View also got a shot in the arm this week, rolling out to cover Canada and the Czech Republic. Google also agreed to permanently blur images on its internal database within one year of their publication on Street View.

Google this week took additional steps to let users crowdsource its Google Maps application, allowing U.S. users to point out gaps in the search engine giant's Google Maps coverage.

Now, when users search and scan map results, they will see a "report a problem" link on the bottom right of a the map, or by right-clicking on the map itself.

For example, if a new highway ramp opens up, or construction is being done on a particular highway, users can alert Google to those changes, helping the company keep its Maps results accurate, current, and therefore, more relevant. See a video demo of this feature in action here.

Andrew Lookingbill, Google software engineer, said Google will sift through users' submissions of this data, corroborate it with other users, sources and imagery, and make changes where they make sense. Google hopes to resolve each edit within a month and will keep users apprised of its editing process if they so choose.

This isn't the first time Google has enlisted the wisdom of crowds for Google Maps. In August, Google rolled out live reporting of traffic conditions on back roads for some cities.

When people who have enabled Google Maps with My Location on their smartphones use Google's traffic map tool, their phones sends anonymous bits of data back to Google describing how fast they're moving. Google compares travelers' speed across thousands of phones moving around a city at any given time, and send it back to users in the Google Maps traffic layers.

Google isn't just appealing to consumers for help mapping the United States on the Web. The company this week created a new base map dataset leveraging geospatial datasets from the USDA Forest Service and the US Geological Survey to boost parks and water bodies. There are also more maps of college campuses, and more maps of trails and paths for cyclists.

Google Maps' Street View, which provides providing 360° horizontal and 290° vertical street-level views of city streets, also got a shot in the arm this week by rolling out to cover Canada and the Czech Republic and offering new high-resolution imagery across the U.S., and several special destinations in Japan through the Street View Partner Program.

Street View, which is now available in 14 countries, is also being rigorously amended by Google to meet citizens' privacy rights. In August, Google created a Street View tutorial to explain how it works to users, and how to go about getting an image removed..

Earlier this week, Google moved to address concerns about Street View from the European Union, which in June asked Google to give advance notice to the public before collecting images and to jettison un-blurred images used to create Street View.

Google, which blurs faces and license plates before publishing them on Street View, agreed to permanently blur images on its internal database within one year of their publication on Street View. This means that Google will only keep the blurred version.

"We think one year strikes a reasonable balance between protecting people's privacy and our ability to reduce mistakes in blurring, as well as use the data we have collected to build better maps products," wrote Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel.

Google Earth climate simulator, launched!

Check this out! Google Earth launches climate simulator tool! Former U.S. Vice Pres. Al Gore is now promoting a video for new emissions scenario features that is developed by Google Earth. The video promo coincides with Copenhagen climate conference.

According to Google official blog:
In collaboration with the Danish government and others, we are launching a series of Google Earth layers and tours to allow you to explore the potential impacts of climate change on our planet and the solutions for managing it. Working with data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we show on Google Earth the range of expected temperature and precipitation changes under different global emissions scenarios that could occur throughout the century. Today we are unveiling our first climate tour on Google Earth: "Confronting Climate Change," with narration by Al Gore. Stay tuned for more tours in the coming weeks!

Together with the Danish government, we're also launching our YouTube COP15 channel. On the channel, you can submit your thoughts and questions on climate change to decision-makers and the world through an initiative called "Raise Your Voice." These videos will be broadcast on screens around the conference in December and rated by viewers of the channel. The top-rated contributions will be aired globally during the COP15 CNN/YouTube debate on December 15th, and the top two submissions will win a trip to Copenhagen. Google Earth 5.1 Released

There is now a new version of Google Earth -- the Google Earth 5.1 is released. According to Google Earth Blog:

"They have improved memory utilization, graphics performance, and even bandwidth related enhancements. They also reduced the start-up time by 25% in most cases. For the Windows version they have included the Google Earth plugin as part of the installation so most users will automatically have the plugin ready when they visit a web site requiring the plugin."

Quebec underwater structure found in Bing Maps?

I am just confused on what really this structure that I found while playfully browsing the updated Bing maps. I found what looks like an underwater structure near the Pont Pierre-Laporte bridge in Quebec, Canada.

I tried to look for it using Google Earth but could not find it.
Can anyone shed a light on what this structure really is? Below is the zoomed image. What is that? That doesn't look like a shadow to me.

Google's Street View Maps of Paris: Maps using tricycle

The goofy-looking tricycle equipped with loads of high-tech equipment roaming the streets is not some mad scientist's invention on the rampage. The three-wheeler is quite a sight with its long pole holding nine cameras, a GPS, a computer and a generator. But the contraption tooling around the French capital needs all that gear to do its job — adding three-dimensional images to Google's Street View Maps.

The U.S. company has hired two young cyclists to ride through gardens, historical sites and other pedestrian-only areas to take thousands of digital photos. The riders, wearing Google tee-shirts and white helmets, are visiting well-known sites such as the Chateau de Versailles, west of Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg on the city's Left Bank and Les Halles, in the busy center of the French capital.

The company plans to add new photos to their Street View option in all French cities with tourist areas. Similar tricycles already combed the streets of Britain and Italy in June and July. Google plans to make 3-D maps of streets in other European countries, but the schedule has not yet been set.

When the camera snaps a photo, everything — faces and license plates included_ is in focus. Special software then blurs the picture. Spotted Friday at La Defense, the tricycle looked decidedly out of place at the modern high-rise business center on Paris' western edge.

A clunky white pole in the back holds an octagonal platform with eight cameras on the sides and one on top. Every minute, the cameras take bursts of high-definition photos to allow online users to get a virtual tour of the area. The photos of Paris and other major French cities to follow were expected to be available online by the end of the year.

Moon in Google Earth: interactive 3D atlas

Forty years ago on July 20, 1969, the world watched as the crew of Apollo 11 took the first human steps on the surface of the Moon. In celebration of this historic occasion, Google launched Moon in Google Earth, an interactive 3D atlas of the Moon, viewable with Google Earth 5.0. Moon in Google Earth was announced at the Newseum, in Washington, DC, where Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Google Senior VP of Engineering Alan Eustace, NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, A Man on the Moon author Andrew Chaikin, and space tourist Anousheh Ansari delivered remarks.

With Moon in Google Earth, users can explore a virtual Moonscape, follow guided tours from astronauts Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) and Jack Schmitt (Apollo 17), see the latest rover concepts by teams competing in the Google Lunar X-PRIZE, view high-resolution ’street View' style panoramic photos, watch previously unreleased video footage captured from the lunar surface, and much more. Moon in Google Earth will also incorporate a complete lunar terrain data-set by Kaguya LALT, produced by JAXA/NAOJ, which will serve as the atlas’ base-map.

The most recent tool to have been developed as a result of the Space Act Agreement between Google and NASA, Moon in Google Earth enables information about the Moon to be accessible to anyone in a unique three-dimensional context.

In addition to satellite imagery and terrain, the following layers can be explored with Moon in Google Earth:

• Featured Satellite Imagery – Explore overlaid satellite imagery and detailed descriptions of selected areas on the Moon from Arizona State University’s “Lunar Image of the Week”

• Spacecraft Imagery – View selected imagery captured by the Apollo Metric Camera, Clementine, and the Lunar Orbiter.

• Apollo Missions – Travel back to the Apollo era and discover the landing sites of Apollo missions 11-17. Explore “Street View”-style panoramic images, watch previously unreleased footage from Spacecraft films , and read about the places astronauts saw on their trips to the Moon.

• Guided Tours – Take a narrated tour of the Moon from Apollo astronauts Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) and Jack Schmitt (Apollo 17).

• Historic Maps – Discover Apollo-era geologic and topographic maps of the Moon that were used in mission control for trips to the Moon.

• Human Artifacts – Learn about the various types of exploratory equipment that humans have left on the Moon and where those objects can be found today. Artifacts from the United States, the Soviet Union, China, the EU, Japan, and India are included, some of them as 3D models.
