Daymet: Daily Surface Weather Dataset Published

The ORNL DAAC is pleased to announce the release of Daymet: Daily Surface Weather Data on a 1-km Grid for North America, Version 2, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1219.

Data set prepared by P.E. Thornton, M.M. Thornton, B.W. Mayer, N. Wilhelmi, Y. Wei, and R.B. Cook.

This data set provides Daymet output data as mosaicked gridded estimates of daily weather parameters for North America, including continuous surfaces of day length, precipitation, shortwave radiation, snow water equivalent, maximum air temperature, minimum air temperature, and water vapor pressure. The Daymet data product was derived from selected meteorological station data by interpolation and extrapolation algorithms.

The current data product covers the period January 1, 1980 to December 31, 2012. Data are available on a daily time step at a 1-km x 1-km spatial res- olution in Lambert Conformal Conic projection with a spatial extent that covers the conterminous United States, Mexico, and Southern Canada as meteorological station density allows.

Daymet mosaic data sets are available from the ORNL DAAC via two download mechanisms: 1) Data files may be obtained through DAAC search and order tools or directly from the FTP site. 2) Data can be subset spatially and temporally prior to downloading via the THREDDS (Thematic Real-time Environmental Data Services) Data Server. Data are provided in Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata convention compliant (version 1.4) netCDF file formats.

Other tools are provided on the ORNL DAAC Daymet website, http://daymet.ornl.gov, that allow extraction of Daymet variable daily data as a text file for a single pixel or the download of gridded Daymet data in 2 degree by 2 degree tile data sets.

The ORNL DAAC, http://daac.ornl.gov, is one of twelve NASA funded Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS), http://earthdata.nasa.gov, Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) archiving and distributing terrestrial ecology and biogeochemical dynamics data.

New Datasets From The Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA)

The ORNL DAAC announces the release of 6 datasets from four science themes. These science research themes are components of the LBA-ECO Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).

Carbon Dynamics:

LBA-ECO CD-08 Tree Diameter Measurements, Jacaranda Plots, Manaus, Brazil: 1999-2001, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1194

Land Use and Land Cover:

LBA-ECO LC-14 Biophysical Measurements, Rainfall Exclusion, Tapajos National Forest, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1196

Nutrient Dynamics:

LBA-ECO ND-01 Georegistered Landsat Imagery for Rondonia, Brazil: 1975-2000, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1197

LBA-ECO ND-01 Landsat 28.5-m Land Cover Time Series, Rondonia, Brazil: 1984-2010, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1165

Trace Gases:

LBA-ECO TG-05 NPP, Carbon Pool, Soil Characteristics, Soil Gas Flux Maps of Brazil, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1199

LBA-ECO TG-10 Fire Emission Factors in Mato Grosso, Para, and Amazonas, Brazil: 2004, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1195

LBA was an international research initiative under the leadership of Brazil. The project focused on the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functions of Amazonia; the impact of land use change on these functions; and the interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system. The LBA-ECO component, which was funded by NASA, focused on the question: "How do tropical forest conversion, regrowth, and selective logging influence carbon storage, nutrient dynamics, trace gas fluxes, and the prospect for sustainable land use in Amazonia? "

New Datasets From The North American Carbon Program (NACP)

The ORNL DAAC is pleased to announce the release of four data sets associated with The North American Carbon Program (NACP):

NACP Integrated Wildland and Cropland 30-m Fuel Characteristics Map, U.S.A., 2010, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1163

NACP Regional: National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Aggregated Gridded Model Data, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1179

NACP Site: Terrestrial Biosphere Model and Aggregated Flux Data in Standard Format, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1192

NACP Site: Tower Meteorology, Flux Observations with Uncertainty, and Ancillary Data, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1178

The North American Carbon Program (NACP), is a multi-disciplinary research program designed to obtain scientific understanding of North America's carbon sources and sinks and of the changes in carbon stocks needed to meet societal concerns, and to provide tools for decision makers. NACP began in 2002 and continues to date. The NACP data collection contains continental carbon budgets, dynamics, processes, and management of the sources and sinks of carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide in North America and in adjacent ocean regions.

Global Fire Emissions Database, Version 3.1 Published

The ORNL DAAC is pleased to announce the release of the Global Fire Emissions Database, Version 3.1:

Global Fire Emissions Database, Version 3.1, http://daac.ornl.gov/cgi-bin/dsviewer.pl?ds_id=1191. Data set prepared by J.T. Randerson, G.R. van der Werf, L. Giglio, G.J. Collatz, and P.S. Kasibhatla. This data set provides monthly burned area, and monthly and annual fire emissions data from July 1996 to February 2012. Emissions data are available for carbon (C), dry matter (DM), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), hydrogen (H2), nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen oxides (NOx), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), organic carbon (OC), black carbon (BC), particulate matter 2.5 micron (PM2p5), total particulate matter (TPM), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) among others. The C4 fraction of carbon emissions is also provided.

This data set is intended for use for large-scale modeling studies. It supersedes and replaces the Global Fire Emissions Database, Version 2 (GFEDv2.1) which was archived by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center in 2007.
