PCI Geomatics Supports SkySat-1 Data Analysis

Geomatics, a world leading developer of remote sensing and photogrammetric software and systems, announced today it supports data analysis of images from SkySat-1, the first in a planned constellation of 24 satellites from Skybox Imaging. Support for SkySat-1 is currently available in the company’s new software, Geomatica 2013 (Service Pack 3 – SP3).

SkySat-1 is a high-performance satellite capable of providing 4-band, high-resolution sub-meter class imagery. Operating in a sun-synchronous orbit of 600 km, SkySat-1 also provides the first commercial high-resolution, full-motion video from space at 30 frames per second.

Geomatica 2013 Software Beta Released

PCI Geomatics, a world-leading developer of geoimaging software and systems, announced today that it has successfully launched the beta version of its desktop software, Geomatica 2013.

The commercial release of Geomatica 2013 will build upon PCI’s successful Geomatica 2012 product, which was launched last fall. The beta program offers testers the opportunity to work with the latest version of Geomatica, where improvements have been made in key areas:

- Faster, efficient workflows for large image-processing projects (100 to 1,000 scenes/project)

- Atmospheric Correction – new, easy-to-use interface for automated detection/masking of clouds as well as haze removal

- Improved results for the extraction of digital elevation models from high*resolution imagery

The purpose of the closed beta program is to give existing PCI customers and partners an opportunity to test the new functionality that has been built into the software – functionality driven by customer and market feedback. Beta testers will work directly with Peter Hazlett, PCI’s Geomatica Product Manager, providing valuable comments and feedback.

In addition, the software will include improved performance through new OpenMP-enabled versions of key algorithms (DEM extraction, Automated GCP and tie point extraction, and epipolar pair generation, among several others).

GeoEye Satellite Images Of The Philippines Soon

Thanks to PCI Geomatics! Soon, high-resolution satellite images of the Philippines will soon be available.

PCI Geomatics, a world-leading developer of geoimaging software and systems, announced today that it will be providing advanced image processing services to Geo-Surveys and Mapping Inc. (GSMI) to produce a high-quality 0.5 meter pansharpened, color-balanced mosaic of the Philippines. The final deliverable will be used by the Department of Agriculture in the Philippines.

GSMI turned to PCI’s Professional Production team to process over 304,000 square kilometers of GeoEye imagery, recognizing the high caliber of expertise and advanced production methods available through PCI’s new service offering. A key deciding factor for GSMI in selecting PCI’s Professional Production Services was to reduce overall project risk by leveraging the expertise and know-how developed at PCI for the last 30 years, ensuring that high-quality final deliverables are produced in a timely manner for their end customer.

“There are some considerable challenges in mapping the Philippines, an archipelago comprising more than 7,100 islands,” said Brad Schmidt, VP of Sales and Marketing at PCI Geomatics. “Persistent cloud cover, discontinuous land areas, and incomplete coverage are some of the issues that we must address.

The GeoImaging Accelerator (GXL) system used by the Professional Production team leverages industry leading color balancing algorithms that were developed in-house; these have been very successful in dealing with the discontinuous imagery. Using GXL, PCI is working diligently to meet the geometric and radiometric accuracy requirements in a timely fashion.”

The imagery collected by GeoEye consists of 0.5 m panchromatic and 2.0 m multispectral data, which is processed by PCI Geomatics in an end-to-end workflow that includes multiple processing steps controlled through quality assurance methods. The workflow includes orthorectification, pansharpening, and mosaicking – the resolution of the final product will be 0.5 m, and the target accuracy will be 2.0 m CE90 – providing a base data set that can be used to produce 1:2,500 scale maps. The project is expected to be completed over an 18 month period; its duration is mainly driven by the availability of cloud-free imagery.

PCI Geomatics has recently introduced Professional Production Services and continues to provide solutions to a number of clients including Esri Inc., which selected PCI to process 50 million square kilometers of Ikonos imagery using GXL deployed to the Amazon Cloud.

PCI Geomatics Earth Observation Tech soon

Bob Dechert, Member of Parliament for Mississauga–Erindale, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, confirmed $200 million in funding for the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI) and announced a $7.6-million repayable investment in support of a research and development (R&D) project being undertaken by PCI Geomatics to develop next-generation earth observation technologies.

The R&D project at PCI Geomatics will involve developing a high-speed computing framework and software suite that will make it possible to process large amounts of raw satellite image data faster and more cost-effectively, with an emphasis on increasing the automation of image processing. The resulting data are essential for decision making in many fields, including environmental monitoring, agriculture, security and intelligence, aerospace and defense, and wide-area surveillance.

SADI supports strategic industrial research and pre-competitive development projects in the aerospace, defense, space and security industries. SADI is managed by the Industrial Technologies Office, a special operating agency of Industry Canada with a mandate to advance leading-edge research and development by Canadian industries.

PCI Geomatica 10.2.1 software, released

Geomatica 10.2.1 software by PCI Geomatics is the latest version of the image-centric desktop software which provides users with additional satellite sensor support as well as new functionality for the SAR Polarimetric Workstation (SPW).

PCI Geomatics has included in this release support for RapidEye – a constellation of five sun-synchronous Earth observation satellites which provide large area, multi-spectral images with frequent revisits in high resolution. Additional support for the high resolution X-band SAR imagery provided by TerraSAR-X is also included in this upgrade.

The SPW provides a complete set of tools and applications designed specifically for the processing and analysis of Polarimetric SAR (POLSAR) data, and version 2.1 is now available and compatible with Geomatica 10.2.1. The Touzi Decomposition introduces new parameters which remove certain ambiguities not previously understood and provide vastly superior results as compared to conventional algorithms.

PCI Geomatics Beijing to host ribbon cutting ceremony for official launch

PCI Geomatics will officially open its new international office in Beijing with a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 2nd 2008. The event is scheduled to take place at the Shangri-La’s Kerry Centre Hotel in Beijing at 3pm.

Although PCI Geomatics Beijing was officially announced in July 2008, this ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the public launch and the initiation of PCI Geomatics operations based in China.

Increased Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) file support includes import and orthocorrection of JAXA Level 1.5 PALSAR data. Owned and operated by Digital Globe, WorldView-1 was recently launched to provide highly detailed imagery for precise map creation, change detection and in-depth image analysis. WorldView-1 is a panchromatic imaging system featuring half-meter resolution imagery. TerraSAR-X is an earth observation satellite that uses an X-band SAR to provide high-quality topographic information for commercial and scientific applications. Infoterra holds the exclusive commercial exploitation rights.

GeoConnections contracts PCI Geomatics

PCI Geomatics, developer of image-centric software and solutions for the geospatial industry, announced it has been awarded a contract with GeoConnections to develop innovative technology for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI).

GeoConnections is a national program led by Natural Resources Canada that collaborates with a range of public and private sector organizations to expand and enhance the CGDI, an on-line resource that enables decision-makers to access, combine, and share geospatial information over the internet and gain new insights into social, environmental, and economic issues.

The project will upgrade the PCI commercial Web Coverage Server (WCS) OGC 1.0 compliant technology to the OGC WCS 1.1 specification and will develop an "Image Correction Appliance" to orthorectify satellite imagery and publish the images via the WCS specification. Project collaborators include Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) and Public Safety Canada. The upgraded software offering will enhance the CGDI by allowing users with similar needs to those of project collaborators to more easily contribute WCS services into the CGDI network.

Additionally, the project will develop an innovative capability to automatically correct satellite imagery anywhere in Canada, using existing GeoBase data as control, allowing organizations to publish data to national standard-level accuracy without in-house expertise.
