DubaiSat-2 Imaging Satellite Ready to Lift Off

A second imaging satellite is scheduled to start beaming high-resolution pictures of the UAE from outer space by the end of next year, according to the report.

A contract was announced yesterday between the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) and a Russian space company, to launch DubaiSat-2 from Yasny Cosmodrome in northern Russia.

International Space Company Kosmotras (ISCK), based in Moscow, also launched DubaiSat-1 in July 2009.

The new satellite will orbit slightly closer to Earth and at a faster speed than the older model, said Salem al Marri, the director of EIAST's space programme department. It will also incline at an angle aligned with the UAE's coastline to capture more pictures in one path.

DubaiSat-1 satellite sends images

The UAE's first satellite has transmitted its first series of UAE images from orbit, including a snapshot of the Palm Jebel Ali, according to a report.

The Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST) received the images from DubaiSat-1 yesterday.

The satellite, which achieved optimal orbit earlier this week, orbits the earth four times a day, sending images of the UAE as often as possible.

His Excellency Ahmed Al Mansoori, Director General of EIAST, said: "These quality images of relevant phenomena such as the Palm Jebel Ali are the first fruits of DubaiSat-1. After processing and analysis, the satellite's images will provide information and data that serve the UAE's development and assist in decision-making. EIAST will work with various government authorities and establishments to deliver the needed imaging."

Images from DubaiSat-1 can be used for a variety of applications from urban development, scientific research, telecommunications, transportation to civil engineering and constructions, mapping and GIS.

DubaiSat-1, UAE Remote Sensing satellite launched

DubaiSat-1, the first remote sensing satellite developed by UAE, has achieved optimal position in orbit around the Earth and has successfully connected with the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology’s (EIAST) earth observation station in Dubai, says report.

The earth observation team is now working on DubaiSat-1’s calibration and data transfer processes before the satellite becomes fully operational, said a statement. DubaiSat-1 was launched into space at 10:46 pm UAE time on July 29 from the launch pad/base in Baikonour in Kazakhstan by a Russian rocket under the supervision of UAE engineers and scientists.

EIAST confirmed UAE engineers and scientists at the Dubai earth observation station were able to stabilise DubaiSat-1 in its 680 km orbit at 3:30 am local time after the satellite completed two successful orbits of the Earth. The team has also remotely deployed the satellite’s solar panels, which will power DubaiSat-1 for the next five years.

The space segment comprises the development, design and manufacture of satellite equipment and components of the measurement and imaging. The ground segment includes the mission control station, image receiving and processing station, antenna and RF subsystem. UAE satellite, DubaiSat-1 launching delayed

Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST) has announced that the clustered launch of a satellite group including DubaiSat-1 has been postponed to July 29. The satellite was to have been launched on July 25. The launching company, International Space Company (Cosmotras), said the launch was postponed mainly to undertake more safety and security tests.

The DubaiSat-1 is the first remote sensing satellite owned by the UAE which represents the country's determination to possess advanced space technologies to fulfil the needs of scientific and technological research, as well as to provide up-to-date spatial and earth monitoring data that aids the holistic growth drive adopted by the nation, said a top official.

The UAE task force has already achieved all tests on DubaiSat-1 and presented its report on the readiness of the satellite for navigating into the outer space. EIAST is co-operating with Cosmotras to make the launch a success on July 29, 2009.

United Arab Emirates: DubaiSat 1 ready for launch

The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) first remote sensing and earth observation satellite is ready for launch later this year.

The Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST), in a statement issued here, said DubaiSat 1 was now awaiting its launch later this year onboard a Russian rocket through the Moscow-based International Space Company (ISC) Kosmotras.

UAE’s first earth observation satellite has been developed by Satellite Technology Research Centre (SatRec) of South Korea with in-depth participation of UAE engineers from the EIAST.

Developing a core team of UAE scientists and experts was the most definitive outcome of a strategy that is geared to support mature, knowledge based development,’ Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, director general of EIAST, said in the statement.

‘Developing a base of UAE scientists and engineers is a crucial first step in becoming a regional and global leader in the fields of advanced science and technology,’ he added.

Designed and developed by a dedicated team and built in collaboration with international entities, DubaiSat 1 will be one of the most advanced small size satellite of its kind when it is launched, according to EIAST.

Meanwhile, the development team behind DubaiSat 1 is already working on finalizing designs for DubaiSat 2, as it continues in its efforts to create the UAE’s first constellation of Satellites.

The design concept of DubaiSat 2 is being laid down and strategic partners for its construction are being selected, EIAST said.

Established in 2006, EIAST is a strategic initiative of the Dubai government and is aimed at inspiring scientific innovation and fostering technological advancement within the UAE and the region.
