Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) To Develop New GPS Technology With Locata Technology

The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and Locata Corporation are pleased to announce they have signed a Co-operative Research & Development Agreement (CRADA) to build and demonstrate new Locata multipath mitigation technology for use in GPS receivers. This cooperation is expected to leverage many years of proprietary Locata ground-based technology development to bring completely new capabilities to satellite-based GPS receivers.

The CRADA is specifically directed to evaluate Locata’s patented correlator and switching antenna technologies for use in positioning receivers running at GPS frequencies. Locata’s engineers will transfer knowledge and experience they have gained with existing Locata commercial systems to help AFIT design and build an initial multi-element GPS-based switching antenna prototype which is based on Locata’s patents. This will ensure AFIT researchers and engineers can familiarize themselves with the new antenna’s characteristics, and provide AFIT with an essential platform to develop GPS-specific versions of Locata’s correlator and switching algorithms. When built, AFIT intends to use their GPS receiver and the prototype switching antenna to physically demonstrate the feasibility of using Locata technology to improve GPS receiver performance.

After initial prototypes are built, AFIT plans to design and test several other GPS-based versions of Locata’s switching antenna array to assess how Locata’s commercial antennas can be adapted to use cases which are of particular interest to the military. Designs already discussed with Locata include stand-alone antennas, arrays conformal to a vehicle’s frame (e.g. Humvee’s roof, aircraft fuselage), and a version built into helmets.

As a first step in implementing this CRADA collaboration, AFIT personnel visited Locata’s head office for the week of April 29th 2013 for a detailed, wide-ranging introduction to the design fundamentals for this new type of antenna. Locata hosted AFIT’s Dr. John Raquet, Dr. Peter Collins and Mr. Jason Barhorst (see picture) in multiple engineering meetings where Locata’s current production version antenna was revealed for the first time, and then closely analyzed. AFIT and Locata engineers then workshopped the modification and design choices required to integrate Locata design into a GPS form-factor.

Dr. John Raquet (Director, Advanced Navigation Technology Center, AFIT) stated: “If this CRADA is successful, Locata’s technology could enable a significantly improved technical performance and reduction in the cost of multiple-element GPS antennas. This will enable much wider adoption of the technology, resulting in more reliable GPS positioning for more users. We are excited to investigate this technology advance for the benefits it will potentially bring to American warfighters.”

AFIT expects at least one Masters Degree to be awarded for the research tasks involved in the CRADA. Work against the approved CRADA project plan will commence immediately, and involve several other participants providing admin and lab support to AFIT and Locata. The Final Report produced by this CRADA will include results and measured performance of the Locata-enhanced GPS receiver and other design considerations gleaned from AFIT’s experience with the new Locata antenna and correlators.

Apple Pen With GPS and Phone Features?

Will Apple release a pen with GPS and phone features?

UPI reports:
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has reissued a patent to Apple for a mobile computer encased in a pen, adding cellular and GPS capabilities.

Originally assigned to British Telecommunications PLC in 1998, the U.S. rights were transferred to Apple in 2008 but the patent was reissued Tuesday with additional features included, Apple Insider reported.

The original patent describes a multifunction device equipped with a pair of accelerometers to recognize handwritten input and a built-in display; the new patent adds 11 new claims to the original, most having to do with cellular connectivity and GPS capabilities.

As described in the patent, the built-in LCD screen would be accompanied by multifunction buttons and a touch strip to navigate through written messages or other stored information.

The patent also cites support for sound input/output components that can be used to process speech-to-text and text-to-speech.

Apple May Buy Waze Map Service

With Apple's map service still messy, the company is now eyeing the online map service Waze. Apple is willing to pay upwards of USD 500 million for the company!

Waze's twist on the online map and navigation market is social networking. The company gathers map data through users as they drive, and is seen as generally more accurate than some other online map services since users are contributing information daily. In contrast, Google's Maps relies primarily on its own cars to gather data and street view photos.

Apple found itself with a marketing black eye after the release of iOS 6 in fall 2012 when it replaced Google's Maps for its own service -- a service that suffered from accuracy issues and missing location data. Apple responded with a public apology and a promise to "throw its weight" behind improving its Maps service.

The company also recently approved Google's own mapping app for the iPhone, which brought back features missing from Apple's own app such as public transportation information. With Google Maps available, competition in the navigation space ramped up a little, although Waze is apparently the only navigation app that gained serious traction after Apple released its own Maps app.

Apple also already has a working relationship with Waze since the company is providing some of the location data iOS 6 users rely on.

European Data Access Service For GPS Data Availability

GPS data can now be obtained via the internet in addition to access via the existing satellite signal. Vice President Antonio Tajani launched today in Brussels the European Data Access Service (EDAS) - a new commercial service of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) – designed to make satellite navigation in Europe more reliable and thus more effective for use in commercial applications in difficult surroundings. EDAS will support new services in numerous sectors including high-precision fertiliser spraying, automatic road-tolling, fleet management, inland waterway navigation, dangerous goods transportation or accurate area measurement. Access to GPS data will also be possible via hand-held devices, using wireless communication from added value service providers.

EGNOS increases GPS accuracy and supports applications requiring high precision by correcting errors caused by atmospheric disturbance factors. As it makes GPS data available via the internet, EDAS ensures that users can access EGNOS information even if the EGNOS satellite signal in space is unavailable - perhaps because of signal obstruction in urban areas. EDAS provides the same information as EGNOS, with the addition of extra data, enabling the creation of new and innovative products and services. EDAS provides a reliable service and the European Commission is fully committed to the service on a long-term basis.

European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, said: "This third EGNOS service once again proves the European Commission's commitment to delivering improved services to the EU's businesses and citizens. Background
The EDAS Service is provided by ESSP (EGNOS Service Provider) under a contract with the European Commission.

EGNOS is the first pan-European satellite-based augmentation system. Similar services are provided in North America by the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and in Japan by the Multifunctional Satellite Augmentation System (MSAS). EGNOS is Europe's first contribution to satellite navigation and is the precursor to Galileo.

The EGNOS system works as follows: 40 ranging and integrity monitoring stations (RIMS) spread across Europe receive signals from US GPS satellites; four mission control centers handle data processing and differential corrections counting; while six navigation land earth stations manage accuracy and reliability data sent to the three satellite transponders, for relay to end-user devices.

EGNOS increases the accuracy of GPS and enables applications requiring higher precision by correcting errors caused by atmospheric disturbance factors. Since October 2009 Europeans have benefitted from the EGNOS Open Service's improved positioning signals (IP/09/1399).Citizens can profit from better personal GPS navigation provided that they use an EGNOS-enabled receiver (as most recent models do).

Since March 2011, air carriers with a certified receiver aboard their aircraft can use EGNOS for en-route navigation and precision approaches, enabling safer landings and more energy-efficient flights (IP/11/247). This "Safety-of-Life" EGNOS Service enables precision landing approaches, making air navigation safer and reduces delays, diversions and cancellations of flights. In addition, EGNOS allows airports to increase their overall capacity and cut operating costs. EGNOS also enables the planning of shorter, more fuel-efficient routes which helps to reduce the CO2 emissions of the aviation industry.

GPS To Be Used For Quick Tsunami Warnings

Global positioning systems (GPS) could provide faster tsunami alerts than current warning set-ups, German researchers said Wednesday, citing data collected in last year's deadly Japan earthquake.

"On the occasion of the Fukushima earthquake, we analysed data from more than 500 GPS stations and showed that a correct estimate of the magnitude of 9.0 and of the generated tsunami could have been possible in just three to four minutes after the earthquake," Andrey Babeyko, a scientist from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam, said in a statement.

This "shows again what potential a GPS shield has in tsunami early warning systems," he added.

The findings were presented at a week-long conference of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna.

If an earthquake occurs near the coast, it can take just 20-30 minutes before a resulting tsunami hits land, but GPS measurements taken almost while the earthquake is still happening would enable a faster assessment of its scale, the researchers said.

Traditional measuring methods require more time to provide an accurate picture, often underestimating the magnitude of a quake at first, they added.

In the case of last year's earthquake in Japan, the authorities became aware of its scale only 20 minutes after the event, possibly leading to many more casualties than if a warning had gone out earlier, according to GFZ.

Some 19,000 people died when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 triggered a tsunami and a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

AT&T* today announced an agreement with Amber Alert GPS to provide wireless connectivity for the Amber Alert GPS V3, a child tracking device that keeps parents notified of the current location of their children.

The V3 offers parents the ability to create "Zones" around their home, neighborhood, school, soccer field, etc., and receive an email or text alert whenever their child enters or exits a Zone. The V3 integrates its tracking with the National Sex Offender database, alerting parents when their child is within 500 feet of a registered sex offender's home. The device has an SOS button children can activate to alert their parents if they need help and the parents can see exactly where their child is. Other features of the Amber Alert V3 include speed alerts, "bread-crumbing," which shows where users have been at specified intervals during the day, and one-way voice monitoring.

Digital Cameras With GPS From Fujifilm and NAVTEQ

Is GLONASS More Accurate Than American GPS?

Russia's navigation system GLONASS is more accurate than American GPS, Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) Deputy Director Anatoly Shilov has claimed.

"Today the accuracy of GLONASS is 6 metres, and that of GPS is 7 metres," Shilov said at the 5th international forum on satellite navigation yesterday, June 1.He said the accuracy of the Russian navigation system would have to be improved to 2-3 metres in the years to come.In his opinion, this can be done only if the system operates at full capacity with 24 satellites.

Russia plans to launch another GLONASS-M satellite in August and another three in September-October from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.GLONASS system will become fully operational by the end of 2011.The previous satellite, launched in late February 26, is designed to operate longer - ten years - and provide more accurate coordinates of down to 1.5 metres.

The next launch from Baikonur is scheduled for this summer. "At any rate, the system will become fully operational by the end of 2011, with 24 satellites covering the whole planet," First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said earlier.

China Launched Eight Navigational and Positioning Satellite

Early Sunday, China successfully launched its eighth orbiter of the Beidou system. It marks the establishment of a basic system for the navigation and positioning network. But how will the system pave the way for China's space exploration project?

As the flaming tail disappears into the sky, came the rise of China's navigation network, Beidou.

The rising star will join seven other satellites already in orbit to form a network which will eventually provide navigation and positioning services around the globe.

The project started in 2000, when the first two Beidou satellites were launched into geostationary orbit.

Now, as the project proceeds, the pioneers are going to retire.

Guo Shuren, Deputy Director of Office for China Satellite Navigation Management said "The first two satellites are for testing only. The current navigation and positioning service will mainly be provided by the other six satellites."

After a period of adjustment, Beidou will start featuring services of navigation, timing, and positioning covering China around the clock.

Unlike the US GPS system it can also provide a text message communication system.

Sun Jiadong, Chief Designer of Beidou Navigation Satellite System said "The main feature of Beidou is that it can deliver messages. In other words, if I pick up a cell phone and communicate with Beidou, it can give me my position."

To complete a regional network to provide navigation services with high precision and credibility, China will launch more satellites within the coming two years.

The network is scheduled to provide global services by 2020.

It is hoped that with systems made in China, the country will be able to map the world.

Representatives from a wide variety of industries and companies have announced that they have joined together to form the "Coalition to Save Our GPS" to resolve a serious threat to the Global Positioning System (GPS) - a national utility upon which millions of Americans rely every day.

The threat stems from a recent highly unusual decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to grant a conditional waiver allowing the dramatic expansion of terrestrial use of the satellite spectrum immediately neighboring that of GPS, potentially causing severe interference to millions of GPS receivers. The conditional waiver was granted to a company called LightSquared.

A representative of one of the founding members of the coalition, Trimble Vice President and General Counsel Jim Kirkland, will testify on this issue on Friday, March 11 before the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science of the House Appropriations Committee.

The "Coalition to Save our GPS" includes representatives from a broad range of industries, including, aviation, agriculture, transportation, construction, engineering, surveying and GPS-based equipment manufacturers and service providers. Vector V100 GPS for the Philippines

Verizon: VZ Navigator X Announced

Verizon Wireless today announced VZ Navigator VX – the latest version of the company’s award-winning navigation service – is now available on select DROID smartphones, including DROID X by Motorola, DROID Incredible by HTC and the Samsung Fascinate. Powered by TeleCommunication Systems, VZ Navigator VX is unlike any other navigation service offered today, providing customers with 3D navigation views using enhanced 3D city models and true-to-life images of highway and exit signs.

An evolution of ordinary direction services, the 3D capabilities of VZ Navigator VX are available in six cities at launch, including: Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Mo., New York, and Washington D.C., with more cities being added in 2011. GPS Sports Watch from Nike and TomTom

Nike and TomTom are to release a sports watch with a touchscreen display and integrated GPS, available from April 2011 onwards.

The touchscreen display is intended to make it easy for runners to check their progress en-route, while TomTom's GPS system can track and map each run.

The watch combines traditional timer features with personal bests and a nag feature to get runners pounding the ground, as well as a handy USB port that lets users upload run data to the Nike+ network for sharing and comparison.

It can also link up with a Nike+ Sensor attached to a running shoe, or a compatible heart-rate monitor for more detailed readouts.

Can GPS Cause Memory Loss?

McGill University researchers conducted a series of three studies which magnify the effects GPS systems have on the human brain, and found that avid GPS users have a higher risk of suffering from problems with memory and spatial orientation.

Veronique Bohbot, associate professor of psychiatry at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and McGill University, along with a team of McGill researchers, found that those who use a GPS system to navigate often have a higher chance of damaging a region of the brain that controls memory.

Humans generally navigate using one of two methods. The first is a spatial navigation strategy where landmarks are used to build cognitive maps that help us figure out where we are without the use of a GPS. The second is a stimulus-response strategy where we drive in auto-pilot mode, making turns in certain places because repetition tells us that this is the best way to reach a specific destination. This second strategy is more closely related to the way GPS users navigate.

When functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or fMRI, was performed on those who navigate both spatially and through stimulus-response strategies, people who used a spacial navigation strategy had increased activity in an area of the brain involved with memory and navigation known as the hippocampus.

McGill researchers found that excessive use of a GPS unit may lead to atrophy of the hippocampus as we age, which puts the person at risk for cognitive problems such as Alzheimer's disease later in life. Alzheimer's disease affects the hippocampus first before any other part of the brain, which leads to problems with spatial orientation and memory.
