RapidEye joins ESA Third Party Missions Programme

RapidEye, a leader in high-resolution, wide area repetitive coverage of Earth through its constellation of five satellites announced today that it is now part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Third Party Mission (TPM) Programme. Through this programme, ESA provides data to the European and international scientific user community, as well as to supplement its own internal projects for research and application development.

RapidEye's archive data is now available to the scientific user community from ESA member states (including Canada), the European Commission Member States, as well as Africa and China (as part of the Dragon programme) through project proposal submission via the RapidEye information area on ESA's Earthnet Online Portal.

RapidEye and ImageSat Partnership

RapidEye, a leader in wide area, repetitive coverage of Earth through its constellation of satellites announced today that a partnership agreement has been signed between RapidEye and the ImageSat International.

The agreement allows ImageSat to use RapidEye imagery to colorize their panchromatic 0.7 meter resolution imagery to produce a colorized product.

John Ahlrichs, RapidEye's Vice President commented, "This unique partnership combines the strengths of two major imaging companies. RapidEye's global, fresh archive of five meter data is the perfect source for ImageSat to use in creating a color ImageSat product. We can almost guarantee that we will have imagery in our extensive archive that will meet the needs of Imagesat and their customers."

RapidEye and S2Bvisio Partnership - Monitoring and Biomass Management

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five identical Earth Observation satellites, confirms its long-standing partnership with S2Bvisio in the development and distribution of expert agricultural services based on RapidEye imagery.

S2Bvisio and RapidEye have been partnering for several years and are committed to developing value-added products for canola and cereal crops which are beneficial to farmers. Ongoing research and development activities are concentrating on cereals, sunflower and sugar beet crops and focus on nitrogen fertilization, irrigation and yield prediction. French specialized research institutes are also involved in many of these projects.

This strategic value-added service collaboration will be intensified in future projects including pasture monitoring and biomass management. RapidEye and S2Bvisio will study the development of services for agricultural operators, processors and other key players in the agricultural world. RapidEye Satellite Image Updates

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five identical Earth Observation satellites, announced today that it has imaged one billion square kilometers of the surface of the Earth since it became commercially operational on February 4, 2009.

All of the data collected over the last 14 months is available in the RapidEye Library which contains multiple datasets including the freshest images imaged just a few minutes or hours earlier. The library is continuously growing as new images are downloaded from RapidEye's satellite constellation daily. The newest coverage of the Somalian-Ethiopian border was acquired by RapidEye 1 (Tachys) on April 7, 2010 at 8 A.M. UTC and made the collection of one billion square kilometers complete. One billion square kilometers represents approximately seven times the Earth's landmass.

The image of the Somalian-Ethiopian border is available for viewing on RapidEye's homepage at www.rapideye.de.

RapidEye continues to image the Earth in unparalleled quantities and will continue to make its satellite imagery available through the RapidEye Library, which can be searched either through a local distributor or directly through RapidEye's Customer Service department. RapidEye Successfully Completes Imaging Campaign in Afghanistan

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five identical Earth Observation satellites, announced today that it has completed a baseline image campaign covering the Helmand river basin in Afghanistan. The project was requested with an imaging window from November 3rd to December 4th, 2009 with the majority of the collection taking place during a 10 day from November 18th to 28th.

Covering over 250,000 square kilometers, the Helmand river basin is the largest in Afghanistan, accounting for almost half of the country's territory. It is the world’s largest opium production region. The project was initiated to obtain baseline imagery maps and ground cover information prior to the beginning of the 2010 growing season.

Since the river basin contains the largest production of opium in Afghanistan, it is essential to understand growth patterns and estimate yields in this area as part of the United Nations (UN), US and other efforts to suppress production. The wholesale value of the opium trade in Afghanistan was estimated at about $3 billion USD in 2008. With its red-edge band and broad area coverage the RapidEye satellite constellation is ideally suited for collecting and characterizing agricultural fields and can contribute greatly to these efforts.

Timeliness and accuracy of information is key when providing frequent agricultural monitoring. The RapidEye constellation of five satellites has the unrivaled ability to image individual fields, counties, states or countries on a frequent revisit cycle. The Helmand river basin project reinforced these capabilities, as the area around and including Lahkar Gah, the capital city of Helmand, was collected seven times in 23 days. RapidEye’s satellites can collect up to 4 million square kilometers of Earth Observation imagery every day and revisit any region on Earth on a near-daily basis thus assuring quick and reliable coverage of large areas at high resolution.

Free RapidEye satellite images in Haiti

RapidEye has completed imaging of all of the regions in Haiti that have been most affected by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the area on January 12. Now, RapidEye is concentrating on delivering these and future images of Haiti at no cost to governmental and non governmental organizations and institutions to fasten the relief work. The company has requested that organizations associated with emergency services in Haiti can contact sales@rapideye.de for the latest free satellite Images.

Despite the unfavourable weather in this area, RapidEye managed to image more than 80 percent of this large area between January 13 and 17, 2010 from an orbit of 630 km. The images clearly show the extensive damage to the region around the epicentre of the earthquake at 18°27'05''N / 72°26'40''W.

RapidEye has also made these images available for editorial use at their website www.rapideye.de. They may be published for editorial use only, in hard copy, electronic or in broadcast format, provided that credit is provided to “RapidEye” on all such products.

The RapidEye Geodata Kiosk, opens

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five identical Earth Observation satellites, released the German version of their online shop for satellite imagery today – “The RapidEye Geodata Kiosk”.

The RapidEye Geodata Kiosk is an online shop for satellite imagery with ready-to-use data available immediately after purchase. After a secure credit card payment is made, the data is ready to be picked up immediately via secure download.

All data available in the Geodata Kiosk are RapidEye Ortho Products (level 3A); orthorectified, five meter pixel sized imagery from the RapidEye satellite constellation, ready to integrate into any GIS system. In addition to the data for Germany this release also includes the data for 16 free demonstration products for potential customers to test.

“With the RapidEye Geodata Kiosk we have the ability to accommodate satellite imagery requests from almost anybody; from the GIS professional who might want to use the data as background imagery, to value adders, who can derive expert analyses from it, to the university student, as well as to my neighbor who might be looking for an image of Berlin for his home. By using the Internet to distribute our data we will be able to service large and small orders of our satellite imagery easily, quickly and automatically,” commented Wolfgang G. Biedermann, RapidEye's CEO. “With the release of our German version we are getting our 'feet wet', and we ask that everyone try it out so that we can work out any initial problems before we make a big splash with the roll-out of our international version in 2010.”

RapidEye plans to expand the Geodata Kiosk to include data products from around the world, with a dedication to providing continually fresh imagery and making data from almost every country on Earth available to anyone, anywhere at anytime.

ENVI Image Processing Software supports RapidEye Images

RapidEye announced that ENVI 4.7, the latest release of ENVI software from ITT Visual Information Solutions, supports RapidEye levels 1B and 3A data products. ENVI 4.7 allows RapidEye consumers to easily access, process, analyze and share information from RapidEye images.

The new capability introduced in ENVI 4.7 provides ENVI users with RapidEye satellite sensor support, the ability to orthorectify RapidEye data using RPCs, and extract DEMs from its stereo pairs. In addition to the support available in ENVI, ENVI's add-on Atmospheric Correction Module now also allows users to correct RapidEye imagery for atmospheric interference.

RapidEye Imagery For USGS

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five identical Earth Observation satellites, announced today that they have penned a contract with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to image a substantial portion of the state of Colorado.

“USGS will be replicating a study that was done in 2008 to better understand how climate changes are impacting the conifer forest conditions in Colorado, and we are excited that our higher resolution imagery and unique Red Edge band have been chosen, which should give them improved results,” commented Joerg Widmer, Sales Team Member of RapidEye.

The contract stipulates that over 130,000 km² (about 50,200 mi²) of imagery collected from June through August 2009 over the state of Colorado will be delivered to the USGS this month. The imagery will be used to support the 2009 Colorado Forest Heath Assessment project, which is being led by the USGS and the Rocky Mountain Geographic Science Center (RMGSC). Additionally, the contract is open for the same time frame in 2010.

RapidEye's remote sensing based solutions for the forest industry range from supporting carbon credit trading to customized alert services. RapidEye satellite imagery for ESA

RapidEye signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to provide RapidEye satellite imagery for monitoring and change detection in areas prone to natural disasters.

The contract between RapidEye and ESA is based on a list of pre-defined, high-risk areas, for which RapidEye will provide satellite imagery before and after an emergency event has occurred. With its constellation of five satellites, the RapidEye system has the capability to revisit an area daily, which accommodates frequent monitoring intervals and can provide the most up-to-date information on environmental changes.

ESA will be using RapidEye's satellite imagery mainly for the project 'Safer', a security and emergency project of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) program in Europe. GMES is a European program for implementing a European capacity for Earth Observation, with an objective to monitor and better understand the environment. By contributing to the success of the 'Safer' project, RapidEye will support ESA in reinforcing the European capacity to better respond to emergency situations deriving from storms, fires, floods, earthquakes or landslides. RapidEye Partners With Lotus

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of five Earth Observation satellites, announced today a new strategic partnership agreement with Taipei City, Taiwan based Lotus (H&R). The partnership establishing Lotus as the only distributor for RapidEye products in Taiwan was signed earlier this week.

RapidEye: Repetitive Coverage in Brazil

RapidEye, the only geospatial solutions provider to own and operate a constellation of Earth Observation satellites, announced today that they will supply the state of Bahia with RapidEye satellite imagery through their Brazilian distributor Santiago & Cintra Consultoria.

“RapidEye has been selected to provide the state of Bahia imagery because of their capacity to return to an area multiple times until a low cloud cover image can be acquired, and because of their high quality satellite data. Bahia is quite difficult to image with low cloud cover, as it is a tropical area, and the five RapidEye satellites are the best system out there to capture these challenging images. RapidEye satellite imagery will provide the state of Bahia with updated land use information for decisions on environmental issues, agriculture and infrastructure. The imagery will be used by multiple organizations and decision makers that are related to territorial planning with a socio economic sustainable approach,” commented Rita Pimentel from SEI – Bahia Government Organization.

RapidEye cloud-free images in Europe, US, Brazil and China

RapidEye, announced that they have collected more than 69 Million square kilometers of at least 80% cloud-free images during their first 100 days of operation. The imaging campaigns were concentrated in Europe, the U.S., Brazil and China. More than 36 Million square kilometers of the Earth's surface, or about one quarter of the total landmass were imaged, often several times.

With the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere, RapidEye is in the process of imaging most of the agricultural land in the United States and Europe. These areas will be repeatedly collected throughout the growing season to provide valuable data for agricultural service customers. In the span of just two weeks in May, over 10 Million km² of low cloud coverage images were collected, demonstrating not only the high imaging capacity, but also the feasibility of high revisit rates.

All of the highest quality multi-spectral data acquired by the RapidEye system is now available in their Library. The Library is continuously growing, with new images being downloaded from their satellites every day. Customers will have the opportunity to choose from the expanding collection of imagery by contacting a RapidEye distributor, a Sales Team member, or a Customer Service representative.

RapidEye and Sovzond partnership

RapidEye, the geospatial solutions provider owning and operating their own constellation of Earth observation satellites, announced their partnership with the Moscow based company Sovzond. Sovzond will be the distributor of RapidEye satellite imagery for markets in Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uszbekistan, Kyrgystan, and Turkmenistan. The agreement was signed this week between Mr. Vladimir I. Mikhaylov, Sovzond's Director General, and RapidEye's CEO, Wolfgang G. Biedermann.

RapidEye will mark the start of its commercial operation in Russia at the III International Conference Remote Sensing – the Synergy of High Technologies. The conference will be held on April 15 - 17, 2009 in Moscow. Currently, RapidEye is working on completing its worldwide network of distributors in order to facilitate their customers easy access to RapidEye products in their own language and region.

RapidEye satellite image distributor for Mexico, Central America

RapidEye, has reached a contractual agreement with the Mexican company Bufete de Ingeniería en Telecomunicaciones y Sistemas, S.A. de C.V. (B.I.T.S.), to be their sole distributor of satellite imagery in Mexico and Central America. The agreement was signed in Brandenburg, Germany, between the CEO of B.I.T.S., Mr. Hector Betancourt and RapidEye's CEO, Mr. Wolfgang G. Biedermann.

RapidEye now on commercial operations

RapidEye, announced that their system has successfully completed all post-launch testing and calibration activities, and is now ready to take on commercial operations.

The satellite constellation was successfully launched in August 2008. Since that time, RapidEye's prime contractor, MDA (MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.) has been conducting the commissioning period on both the space and ground segment in which system performance and product quality were thoroughly measured, analysed and verified.

“This is where MDA 'hands us the keys' to the system,” said Wolfgang Biedermann, CEO of RapidEye. “Not only can we begin selling our data products, but this is also the point where we can integrate our imagery into the services we're currently working on. This milestone is as significant for us as the launch of the satellites. We have overcome a lot of obstacles to get here and if it weren't for the talent and dedication of so many people from MDA, its subcontractors Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and Jena-Optronik GmbH, and our own RapidEye specialists, this wouldn't have been possible.”

A worldwide network of distributors is being assembled by RapidEye to facilitate easy access to RapidEye's products by customers in their own language and region. RapidEye images free download - demo products

You can download for free RapidEye images -- demo products. RapidEye system has made the demonstration products available for the public for the very first time.

The sample datasets are available for download as a RapidEye Ortho Product (level 3A) and RapidEye Basic Product (level 1B). The RapidEye Ortho Product (level 3A) images have not only been radiometrically corrected, but also have been orthorectified using Ground Control Points and a DTED level 1 SRTM DEM (digital elevation model) or better.

The RapidEye Basic Product (level 1B) has radiometric and sensor corrections applied to the data. The sample datasets include a metadata file, giving the user information about the image such as the acquisition date and time, file format, product level and locational coordinates. The datasets can be downloaded for free instantly as a zip-file from the RapidEye website.

RapidEye images first public release

The first public release of a RapidEye image is being unveiled today on the company's website. This demonstration image highlights the capabilities of RapidEye imagery in many market segments, by showing diverse landscapes that include agricultural fields, forests, cities and roads.

“Our customers have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” stated Michael Prechtel, RapidEye's Head of Marketing and Sales, “Requests keep coming in, and our own internal team has been waiting for imagery to test the various service modules being developed. If everything stays on schedule, we will be able to start delivering in December.”

The image shows the area of El Bolsón in Argentina near the Argentinian-Chilean border. El Bolsón is situated in the far southwest of the Río Negro Province in Argentina at the foot of the Piltriquitron Mountain.

The image was recorded by RapidEye's camera built by Jena-Optronik of Jena, Germany from the satellite RapidEye # 1, named Choros, at a nadir view angle and has a pixel size of 5 meters. It was downloaded to KSAT (Kongsberg Satellite Services) in Svalbard, Norway and electronically transmitted to the RapidEye headquarters in Brandenburg, Germany.

“We are very pleased about the quality of this image,” commented Pietro Widmer, RapidEye's Head of Operations and Engineering, “This is an important step and we will continue with commissioning the processing systems built by MDA (MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.) and initiate the crucial image calibration activities of all five satellites to ensure we will deliver to our customers only top quality data and services.”

The commissioning and calibration phase that the RapidEye system is currently undergoing is expected to last into December, allowing for commercial operations to start by the end of this year. At that time RapidEye plans to have radiometrically corrected and orthorectified demonstration datasets available for download on the company website. They will include all accompanying metadata files.
