Open Foris: The Open Source Software Tools To Monitor, Improve State of World's Forests

Open Foris: Open Source Software Tools Launched. Press Release. FAO has launched free software tools that it hopes will improve the way many developing nations monitor the state of their forests to tackle deforestation and climate change.

The tools are designed to assist countries through the entire lifecycle of a forest inventory - from assessment, design and field data collection to analysis and reporting. The governments of Finland and Germany have supported the development of the software called Open Foris.

Global knowledge sharing platform
The Forestry Department of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization helps nations manage their forests in a sustainable way. Accurate information about forests is crucial for governments to manage their natural resources sustainably, but nearly 80 percent of developing countries have difficulty obtaining and using basic information about their forest resources.

At the same time, deforestation and forest degradation - largely taking place in developing countries - are among the largest sources of carbon emissions globally caused by humans.

"Many countries simply do not have a full picture of what is happening in their forests, and without that knowledge it is hard to develop effective forest policies to combat deforestation and forest degradation or to advance national climate change strategies," Eduardo Rojas-Briales, Assistant Director-General for Forestry, explained.

"We hope that Open Foris will be a game changer, as it is the first comprehensive open source tool that will not only guide the countries through the whole process of data collection and analysis but will also encourage and facilitate open knowledge sharing in an innovative way. Increased transparency will help the policy makers obtain the information they need to make informed decisions," he added.

The new FAO tools also simplify the complex process of transforming raw data such as tree measurements and satellite imagery into valuable information in the form of interactive web pages with statistics, graphs, maps and reports.

In addition, the software includes built-in tools to help countries meet international reporting requirements, for example in the context of REDD+ activities related to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and increasing the carbon stock in forests.

Piloting in more than 10 countries
Released at the 2014 International Union of Forest Research Organizations' World Congress in Salt Lake City, Open Foris tools are already being successfully tested in more than 10 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

For example, earlier this year Ecuador and Tanzania completed their first national forest inventories with the help of Open Foris tools, and a number of experts from other countries, such as Argentina, Bhutan, Papua New Guinea and Uruguay have recently received training to use different components of the software.

Viet Nam carries out a national forest inventory every five years, and for the first time has been piloting Open Foris in one region after adapting the open source code to use the software in Vietnamese.

Forest rangers collect information on canopy cover and the number, size, species and quality of trees as well as the use of forest resources by local populations before entering the data into Open Foris software back at the office.

"It enables us to calculate variables and changes to the forest and tree resources within a certain period, as well as changes to other environmental values of the forests such as carbon pools, biodiversity and non-timber forest products," said Ho Manh Tuong of Viet Nam'sForest Inventory and Planning Institute. "Through the program, the complete national forest stock can be assessed."

The inventory will soon become even more efficient when rangers start using an Open Foris tool that enables them to enter data directly with their smartphones or tablets, eliminating the need to input information collected on paper forms.

ABOUT FAO
Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's efforts - to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. Our three main goals are: the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

FAO creates and shares critical information about food, agriculture and natural resources in the form of global public goods. But this is not a one-way flow. We play a connector role, through identifying and working with different partners with established expertise, and facilitating a dialogue between those who have the knowledge and those who need it. By turning knowledge into action, FAO links the field to national, regional and global initiatives in a mutually reinforcing cycle. By joining forces, we facilitate partnerships for food and nutrition security, agriculture and rural development between governments, development partners, civil society and the private sector.

An intergovernmental organization, FAO has 194 Member Nations, two associate members and one member organization, the European Union. Headquartered in Rome, Italy, FAO is present in over 130 countries. http://www.fao.org

Free Map of Sounds in South America

The sound of the intersection of two streets in Chile, the singing of birds in a park in Argentina or the silence of a room in Brazil, are sounds that are contained in Audiomapa.org, a collaborative platform dedicated to the soundscape, and phonography listening. This initiative by Fernando M. Godoy, director of Tsonami Sound Art Festival, is an online map of environmental records, accounting auditory heritage or aesthetic qualities, and sound from different geographies.

In Audiomapa.org anyone can participate, upload records or "soundscapes" in South America, whether urban, natural, cultural, mechanical, submarines, electromagnetic or others. In addition, the map has various playback functions with which you can, for example, create "sound travel" where the user defines a geographic area to listen.

The audios use free licenses and are available for all noncommercial creative use. "Environmental recordings are unedited composition or assembly" describes Godoy, who adds that "the Audiomapa can be used either to preserve the intangible heritage as a more aesthetic or artistic reason. So the invitation is open, even may be other utilities, such as educational or scientific".

Audiomapa.org was presented Thursday August 23 at 19:00 pm in Balmaceda Young Art, Valparaiso headquarters, 739 Santa Isabel Street, Cerro Alegre.

VDatum Free Software - Convert Horizontal, Vertical Datums

VDatum is a free software tool being developed jointly by NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS), Office of Coast Survey (OCS), and Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS). VDatum is designed to vertically transform geospatial data among a variety of tidal, orthometric and ellipsoidal vertical datums - allowing users to convert their data from different horizontal / vertical references into a common system and enabling the fusion of diverse geospatial data in desired reference levels.

VDatum converts the following:

1. Horizontal datums: from NAD 27 or NAD 83(1986) to NAD 83(HARN) and other ellisoidal datums such as WGS 84 and ITRF

2. Vertical datums: among three vertical groups: tidal datums, orthometric datums and ellipsoidal datums (i.e. three-dimension or 3-D datums), in which:

- Tidal datums are available along the coastlines from Rhode Islands to Texas and from Washington to California. (Why doesn't VDatum provide tidal conversions inland?)
- Transforms among ellipsoidal and orthometric datums are available throughout the United States;
- Conversions between the NAD 83 ellipsoidal datum and the NAVD 88 orthometric datum are calculated base on the current GEOID model of 2009. Previous NGS's GEOID models are also supported, including GEOID 99, GEOID 03, GEOID 06 ;
- Conversions between the NGVD 29 datum and the NAVD 88 datum are done by the NGS's VERTCON model;
- Conversions between IGLD 85 datum and the NAVD 88 datum in the Great Lakes are done by the NGS's IGLD85 model;

3. Input elevation data in geographic (latitude, longitude), UTM (northing, easting) and geocentric XYZ coordinates.

VDatum was first introduced to support a seamless bathymetric - topographic digital elevation model (DEM) for Florida's Tampa Bay region by merging the "best available" NOAA bathymetric data and USGS topography data. The best available bathymetric data were selected from the NOAA / NOS Hydrographic Survey database. For the Tampa bay region, approximately half of the sounding data collected were referenced to a mean low water (MLW) vertical datum, and the other half to a mean lower low water (MLLW) vertical datum. The best available topographic data were selected from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED). The NED dataset is horizontally referenced to NAD 83 and vertically referenced to NAVD 88. Prior to merging, both dataset were transformed to a common reference coordinate system, both horizontally and vertically, using VDatum.

The seamless bathy-topo DEM resulting from the VDatum Demonstration Project in Tampa Bay has not only proved to solve the problem of inconsistency among diverse dataset of bathymetry, topography and shorelines data that causes difficulty in mapping coastal regions, but also provides standard geospatial data for multiple applications. Applications benefiting from VDatum include:

- Inundation modeling: storm surge, tsunami, sea level rise impacts
- Ecosystem modeling and coastal managements
- Hydrographic survey depths using Kinematic GPS for vertical referencing
- Shoreline extraction from LiDAR data

US GIS Data Repository - GIS Data Free Download

The United States GIS Data Repository (USGDR) is on a mission of “Making Public Data Public” and needs federal, state, and local GIS departments to join in. Kyle Souza, a Director at the USGDR, explains, “The government generates a large amount of vector data, but lacks the resources to distribute their data. This is where the USGDR comes in; as a non-profit we are not in this for “the money,” we are here to help both the data creators and the data users. We want to partner with those who manage data, to help them cut costs, while at the same time making it easy for end-users to freely access this data.”

The mission of the USGDR is accomplished by making an arrangement with the data author/manager (such as a state GIS department) that allows that organization to upload their GIS data to USGDR servers. Anyone who visits to the USGDR website (www.usgdr.org) can then download the data for free.

The USGDR is looking for federal, state, and local GIS departments that want to save money without compromising quality. By pooling the resources of many organizations everyone can save money, especially those looking to download data. If you are interested in partnering with the USGDR please email info@usgdr.org.

Seabed Map Free Download

The high-resolution maps show the hidden seabed of the deep sea around the country in incredible digital detail, making them a treasure for all New Zealanders.

They give an unprecedented insight into the shape of the ocean floor – ridges, volcanoes, plateaus, canyons and seamounts. The data presents digital terrain models generated from multibeam data, combined with traditional bathymetric data.

The 250-metre-resolution digital terrain maps of New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone are available in multiple high-resolution file formats to suit many current and future needs. The dataset provides the most up-to-date bathymetry of the major features from one of the largest areas of deep-water seabed under our national jurisdiction.

“These maps produce significant benefit for all New Zealanders and for all users of the marine environment, revealing potential for fisheries, environmental management, conservation, hazard mitigation, and energy and mineral opportunities,” says NIWA Marine Database Manager, Kevin Mackay.

NIWA are proven specialists in fine-detail mapping and advanced bathymetric data analysis. These maps are the culmination of NIWA’s geological, oceanographic, and fisheries research, and their collection of high-resolution sea-floor images from around New Zealand. They also incorporate significant worldwide data sets.

NIWA Chief Scientist Māori Development & Oceans, Dr Charlotte Severne, says putting the maps online is an opportunity to showcase the extent of what NIWA does.

“These are the best map product around. They include an extensive area of 11.7 million square kilometres, an area that extends past the continental shelf, and to depths of up to 11 000 metres,” says NIWA geologist, Dr Helen Neil. “They are the product of truly sophisticated seafloor mapping combined with expert marine geological knowledge.”

New Zealand has the world’s fourth biggest Exclusive Economic Zone. This ocean and sea floor is a massive area of nearly four million square kilometres, and it’s New Zealand’s biggest resource.

So what can you get and what can you do with theses files? The data products start from low-resolution images of the New Zealand region, from the Pacific Islands to the Southern Oceans, for use as a general background to maps, reports and assignments. There is a high-resolution image of the NZ region able to be zoomed in to for more detailed information and planning. At the top end are high-resolution 250 metre gridded Geographical Information Systems (GIS) products for use by mapping professionals. To download the maps go here.

The digital products and bathymetry project are the culmination of effort at NIWA, supported by funding from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology and the Royal New Zealand Navy, the US National Geophysical Data Center, Institute Francais de Recerche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer, and Land Information New Zealand.

The maps (bathymetry) of NZ online, were produced from 2 593115 km2 of swath coverage and 5 005 568 kilometres of single-beam survey lines. That’s equivalent to nearly 30 years at sea.

“This new geographic version of a PDF file is excellent for organizations that want the high graphic quality of a conventional PDF file, combined with some of the functionality of a GIS. LOGIQ Viewer allows distributors the ability to publish real map documents in an easy to use, standard format to users with little or no GIS experience, at a cost that is very affordable. This product is on the cutting edge of potentially opening up GIS to the whole world", said Karl Phillips, CEO of JollyRogerMaps.com.

Map users with no GIS training now have free access to powerful GIS analysis tools all running inside a portable PDF map. For the download link, visit http://www.globalmapsystems.com.

Free GeoViewer 3.0

LizardTech, a division of Celartem, Inc. and a provider of software solutions for managing and distributing digital content, announced the release of a free GeoViewer 3.0, a standalone application for viewing geospatial imagery and vector overlays.

The free GeoViewer application replaces LizardTech's previous GeoExpress View utility that was offered for $299. GeoViewer 3.0 enables users to view and export layers from varied sources, such as local repositories, Express Server catalogs, and WMS and JPIP servers. GeoViewer supports a wide range of input formats and exports to GeoTIFF, PNG and JPEG. It's the most efficient means of viewing MrSID and JPEG 2000 images.
