Download Landsat 8 Images: Datasets Available for Online Users

The Landsat program is a series of earth-observing satellite missions jointly managed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The first Landsat satellite launched in 1972, and the latest satellite in the series, Landsat 8, provides continuity, as well as improvements, on important global monitoring of our earth.

Landsat 8 was launched February 11, 2013, and contains two sensors. One collects 8-band multispectral imagery at 30-meter resolution, as well as panchromatic imagery at 15 meters. The other collects thermal imagery at 100-meter resolution. The orbit of the satellite results in it capturing 170-by-185-kilometer-sized scenes along a predefined path that returns to the same location every 16 days.

Landsat imagery has significant value in environmental and natural resource studies and research, such as agriculture and forestry. Both governmental and nongovernmental organizations interested in monitoring urbanization or analyzing concepts such as carbon sequestration will also find the continual monitoring of the earth at medium resolution to provide a wealth of information. The education aspects of the services are also boundless.

As with the other satellites, USGS manages the collection of imagery from Landsat 8. Every day, staff receive and process approximately 450 new Landsat 8 scenes. These scenes are available for download at no cost within 24 hours of acquisition. The current archive of Landsat scenes now contains more than four million scenes. Full-resolution, natural-color renderings of these are quickly accessible using LandsatLook, which is powered by ArcGIS for Server.

Landsat 8 Now Available for ArcGIS Online Users

A new set of Landsat 8 services released by Esri provides access to the latest and best Landsat 8 scenes. These services make the valuable Landsat scenes from USGS quickly accessible as multispectral, multitemporal image services that can be used in a wide range of web and desktop applications.

Esri first released Landsat imagery services—more than eight terabytes—to ArcGIS Online users in 2012. These image services made the collection of Landsat Global Land Survey (GLS) scenes spanning the years of 1980, 1990, 2000, 2005, and 2010 accessible as more than 20 dynamic, multispectral, and multitemporal image services. These dynamic services enable a wide range of client applications, such as temporal access to any of the band combinations, as well as products such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) without the need to download or locally process any data.

For the Landsat 8 services, Esri daily downloads the latest, approximately 300 Landsat 8 scenes and adds them to a set of image services that contain the best and most recent 50,000 Landsat 8 scenes, which require about 60 terabytes for storage. These scenes are hosted on Esri's cloud infrastructure and available for access in different modes.

By default, the user views the best scenes. The best scene is determined using a weighting of cloud coverage and age of the scenes. Users can reorder the scenes based on metadata attributes, lock onto a specific scene, or use a time slider to see how an area changes with time.

Not all scenes are kept; otherwise, the data volumes for storage would continually increase. Instead, older scenes are removed. Typically, the latest four scenes with less than 50 percent cloud coverage are kept, as well as the scene that is nearly cloud free and closest in date to the GLS 2000 scene, so as to aid in longer-term change analysis.

Services can be accessed in web maps but can also be used in a range of applications and ArcGIS for Desktop. A subscription to ArcGIS Online is required to access the services, but there is no charge for usage.

Many Services Available in the Cloud

A number of different image services are served from the same source. The most used is the Landsat 8 Views service. This allows users to view a range of different band combinations including natural color (bands 4,3,2) and color infrared (bands 5,4,3), which highlight photosynthesis in plants. The agriculture band combination (bands 6,5,2) highlights differences in various crop types. The SWIR band combination (bands 7,6,5) provides better penetration for clouds. The bathymetric option (bands 4,2,1) provides better water penetration and is especially useful for coastal applications.

Users can also select any user-defined band combination. The functions can be applied with fixed enhancements or with the Dynamic Range Adjustment Stretch, which requests the server to maximize the contrast so as to get the most out of the extended dynamic range of the sensors.

The Landsat 8 Views service also provides two indexes. The Colorized NDVI provides information on the health of vegetation, while the Colorized Normalized Difference Water Index highlights areas that have high moisture content.

The Pan-sharpened service provides enhanced natural color imagery by sharpening the natural color bands (4,3,2) with the 15-meter panchromatic imagery. The Panchromatic service provides access directly to the panchromatic imagery. Again, the dynamic range adjustment capability ensures that maximum information content is available even when used in web applications.

While all these services return 8-bit rendered versions of different products, the Analytic service enables applications to access the full range of data values that might be required for some analysis applications.

Fuze Go Plugin for ENVI to be Unveiled at Esri User Conference

Scene Sharp USA will formally introduce the Fuze Go Plugin for ENVI this week at the Esri User Conference in San Diego. The plugin gives ENVI software users access to Fuze Go MS Sharp, an automated multispectral image fusion software which can simultaneously fuse up to 30 spectral bands of data from inside the popular ENVI geospatial processing package.

“The Exelis ENVI software is widely known for its multi- and hyperspectral image processing capabilities and is an ideal platform for geospatial information users to access the automated Fuze Go MS Sharp image fusion software,” said Ian Lucas, President and CEO of Scene Sharp Technologies Incorporated™.

Scene Sharp will demonstrate the Fuze Go plugin for ENVI along with the full line of Fuze Go software products in booth #410 at the Esri User Conference being held July 14-18 in San Diego.

The plugin gives users the option of accessing the Fuze Go MS Sharp software either within the ENVI workflow or outside of it so that fusion can be performed as a stand-alone application. This frees up the ENVI software license for other image processing activities. No GIS or image processing experience is needed to utilize the Fuze Go tools.

Fuze Go is a fully automated technology that enables users to quickly and easily fuse data sets to add color to non-colorized satellite and aerial imagery with just a few mouse clicks. One of its most common applications is pan-sharpening. By colorizing image data, GIS users can visualize and extract richer information content from remotely sensed data to make better informed decisions.

Also at the 2014 Esri UC, Scene Sharp USA will demonstrate the powerful processing capabilities in its Fuze Go SAR Sharp application, which was designed for more effective exploitation of data captured by satellite-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors. Fuze Go SAR Sharp fuses gray-scale radar data with optical multispectral bands to colorize the SAR data set. An industry first is the “Dynamic Reader” which allows pre-process on the fly viewing of SAR imagery with real time adjustment of color intensity being added to the scene.

Fuze Go MS Sharp and SAR Sharp are available for purchase for an annual license fee. Batch processing versions of the software packages are also offered to perform automatic fusion of multiple optical or SAR scenes.

MapSAR - GIS Tools for Search and Rescue Personnel

Esri today announced the launch of a new web portal that supplies search and rescue (SAR) personnel with GIS tools, educational materials, and a virtual community for learning and sharing.

"The launch of the MapSAR website is the result of a community of search and rescue personnel linked together by their use of GIS," says Russ Johnson, global director of disaster response for Esri. "The goal is to build on that work and supply standards, documents, and training to the international SAR community. We want to help these outstanding organizations and individuals with their very important job—finding lost people."

GIS and SAR professionals from Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, Esri, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Mountaineer Rescue Group came together to develop the MapSAR application. It supplies all SAR personnel, regardless of technical background and skill, with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively use GIS in their operations. Staff members will be able to easily establish their own protocols and workflows to carry out the mapping and planning functions within the incident command structure (ICS). They will be able to apply GIS skills to effectively track search teams and assets for safety and operational efficiency.

The MapSAR site includes the following:

MapSAR Tool: This free tool runs with Esri ArcGIS 10 software and enables maps to be generated, stored, and printed quickly so that search teams can deploy faster to look for missing people.

SAR E-books: Two newly published e-books give personnel a rich array of information. Using GIS for Wildland Search and Rescue is a core instruction manual for developing a working knowledge of all things GIS for every team member. MapSAR User's Manual is for more advanced GIS users and provides an introduction to and a detailed tutorial for MapSAR.

Mapping the Transit of The Venus Planet

Working with Astronomers Without Borders, GIS software company Esri has built a Transit of Venus web map application that instantaneously displays data from amateur astronomers. Using a free smartphone application, these citizen scientists from around the world will capture their observations of the transit of Venus in early June and have their timing measurements immediately published on a map on esri.com.

"The Astronomers Without Borders relationship with Esri is fantastic," said Mike Simmons, president of the nonprofit organization. "These technologies make it possible for everyone to take part in important astronomical events."

The Esri Transit of Venus web map application, running on ArcGIS for Server, will work in coordination with the iPhone and Android Transit of Venus applications. This web application will show the following:

- Where on earth the transit is visible and at what times
- Tweets, pictures, and videos about the transit
- Points of observations from the phone application with recorded and predicted times
- An animation on what the transit looks like on the sun and which side of earth can view it

On June 5 or 6, 2012, depending on one's location, Venus will pass between the earth and the sun. Through telescopes, professional and amateur astronomers will see Venus as a small, round dot moving across the sun. Since the eighteenth century, astronomers' measurements of this rare event have been used to calculate the distance between the earth and the sun.

With thousands of people projected to participate in the 2012 Transit of Venus project, this may well be one of the largest crowd sourced mapping projects to date. The transit recordings will first be sent to the project center in the Netherlands and a few seconds later to Esri in Redlands, California. Anyone can add their impressions of the transit via Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube, and these social media items will be displayed on the Transit of Venus map.

LiDAR Data on ArcGIS 10.1 - Free Online Training

With LiDAR data becoming more common and affordable, Esri software users now have a greater opportunity to use this 3D content within their GIS workflows. In ArcGIS 10.1, Esri's upcoming software release, LiDAR data can be managed, viewed, updated and shared, all while remaining in its native format.

To show users how to use LiDAR data in workflows, Esri will host the live training seminar “Working with LiDAR Data in ArcGIS 10.1" on May 24, 2012. The seminar will introduce users to the methods ArcGIS can manage LiDAR data, and how they can quickly view the data as points and triangulated irregular networks (TINs), take measurements and edit classification codes. Since LiDAR data typically comes in collections of LAS files, attendees will also learn how to manage these collections using a mosaic dataset, as well as disseminate LiDAR data to desktop and web applications.

After watching this seminar, attendees will understand how to:

- Edit LAS classification codes
- Access LAS files from a mosaic dataset

GeoEye and Esri Developing Global Crisis Response Service

GeoEye, Inc., a leading source of geospatial information and insight, announced that it will jointly develop a new crisis response imagery service with Esri, the leading global geographic information software provider. This service, expected to be released this spring, will augment Esri's current disaster response capability with GeoEye's ability to task its satellite to collect high-resolution satellite imagery after a crisis. Currently, Esri supports disaster and crisis response globally with best practices, technology and field response teams. GeoEye content plays a critical role in all aspects of disaster response. The new service will provide Esri and their user community access to timely and quality imagery during disasters.

National Geographic World Basemap by Esri, Released

In cooperation with National Geographic, Esri released the National Geographic World Map. Esri and National Geographic collaborated to produce a distinctive basemap that reflects National Geographic's cartographic design, typographic style, and map policies. Designed to be aesthetically pleasing, the National Geographic World Map is for users who want to display minimal data on a vibrant, highly detailed background. The map is currently available at ArcGIS Online in the basemap gallery.

The new basemap combines a century-old cartographic tradition with the power of GIS technology to produce a distinctive Internet-based map service serving GIS, consumer, education, and mobile users. This new map will be added to Esri's collection of existing basemap services designed for different uses and needs. All Esri basemaps are freely accessible for internal- and external-facing sites.

Cloud computing provides opportunities for organizations to become more cost-effective, productive, and flexible to rapidly deliver new capabilities.
The pay-as-you-go pricing model is often quite flexible when renting cloud applications or infrastructure, allowing prospective cloud clients to "try before they buy," while existing cloud consumers can pay in advance to take advantage of volume discounts and satisfy budget forecasting requirements. Renting assets shifts the duty of maintaining on-premises data centers to the cloud vendor, alleviating the customer's responsibility for software and hardware maintenance, ongoing operation, and support.

Ideally, cloud adopters should be confident that they are consuming state- of-the-art systems that are highly reliable and flexible enough to handle large traffic fluctuations. The burden, then, is on the vendor to scale and continually reinvest in the on-demand IT architecture and service so that consumers are consistently provided with a robust, updated solution.

Moving parts of the corporate data and computing center to the cloud also reduces the amount of fragmented infrastructure, driving down up-front capital spending. As monies are reallocated to be invested in core business, other initiatives could be launched to provide direct value to customers and employees, giving the organization a competitive advantage.

With increasing outsourcing and offshoring, leading to the creation of a global workforce, team productivity depends on the power of networks and the Internet as a common platform. As such, cloud services are available 24/7, accessible from any browser on any device regardless of time zone. This provides faster, easier access for workers to do their jobs, allowing competitive differentiation for the organization and, likewise, retaining and attracting valuable and talented staff.

ESRI: Activity in Acute Public Hospitals in Ireland, 2010 Annual Report

This report presents information on discharges from 57 Irish acute public hospitals participating in the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) scheme in 2010. Hospitals collect and return administrative, demographic and clinical information for each discharge to the ESRI on a monthly basis. The HIPE system is supported by the HSE which, together with the Department of Health, receive the data on a monthly basis from the ESRI. The hospitals that collect the data have available to them a reporting system which enables immediate and continuous access to the current data for management and other purposes.

At the national level, HIPE data can inform policy decisions and developments in areas such as hospital budgeting, service planning, workload measurement etc.

The report provides information on the number of day patient and in-patient discharges, together with their demographic characteristics and geographical distribution. The number and type of diagnoses and procedures reported for discharges, together with the case mix treated, are also profiled. Marking a change to previous reports, the demographic and morbidity analyses for Maternity discharges are presented separately to enable a more comprehensive overview of trends in this area.

MAIN FINDINGS OF THE 2010 REPORT

Total Discharges

- Over 1.44 million discharges were reported by the participating hospitals compared to 1.41 million discharges in 2009 – an increase of almost 3%.
- Day patients accounted for 59% of total discharges in 2010, an increase of 4% since 2009. Given that day cases accounted for 53% of total discharges in 2006, the mean increase over the period 2006-2010 was 6.6%.
- In 2010 in-patients accounted for 41% of total discharges of which 60% were emergency in-patients, 18% were elective in-patients and 21% were Maternity in-patients. In-patients used just over 3.57 million bed days in 2010, a decrease of 1% from 2009.
- Females accounted for 53% of total discharges.
- Public patients accounted for 81% of total discharges (78% of total in-patient bed days) while private patients accounted for the remaining 19% of total discharges (22% of total in-patient bed days).
- Medical card holders accounted for 54% of total discharges.
- Almost one-third of total discharges were aged 65 years and older, an increase of 5% between 2009 and 2010 and a mean increase of 5.6% between 2006 and 2010. This age group also used the highest proportion of in-patient bed days (40%), an increase of almost 1% on the 2009 figure.

Non-Maternity Discharges

- Excluding Maternity discharges, in-patients who stayed for more than 30 days accounted for 3% of in-patient discharges and 32% of in-patient bed days.
- The mean length of stay for acute in-patient discharges (excl. Maternity) was 4.9 days. This varied by hospital type as voluntary hospitals recorded a mean length of stay of 5.8 days for acute in-patient discharges (excl. Maternity) compared to 4.4 days reported for county hospitals.

Maternity Discharges

- 72,675 women gave birth in acute public hospitals reporting to HIPE in 2010.
- Normal (non-instrumental) deliveries accounted for almost six in every ten deliveries, followed by Caesarean section at 26%. Instrumental deliveries accounted for the remainder.
- Almost 24% of women who delivered and who were treated on a public basis had a Caesarean section. Of these Caesarean section deliveries, 44% were elective.
- Almost 35% of women who delivered and who were treated on a private basis had a Caesarean section. Of these Caesarean section deliveries, 60% were elective.

Building Navigator Widget for Esri Flex Viewer 2.4

Building Navigator Widget for Esri Flex Viewer 2.4. Designed for the Esri Flex Viewer 2.4, the Building Navigator widget allows users to click on a building footprint and drill down inside the building to view floors, spaces, and other data layers. In addition to supporting floor by floor navigation, this widget can be configured to show different types of floor plans such as vector information from CAD, raster images like an Emergency Action Plans, and other ArcGIS Server map services for things like assets or personnel. By enabling users to quickly and easily navigate and query buildings, floors, and spaces, the Building Navigator widget provides answers to a wide range of spatial facility questions.

ESRI GIS Grants for 4-H Program 2012

Esri is now accepting applications for its 2012 GIS Grants for 4-H Program. All 4-H Clubs in the United States, as well as 4-H and Operation Military Kids clubs on American military bases around the world are eligible. Now in its ninth year, the program is designed to help expand the club's twenty-first century mandate for science, engineering, and technology activities.

The grant levels include Getting Started with GIS, ArcGIS Youth Club, and ArcGIS Educator programs. Each grant level has its own eligibility criteria and required activities. Grant recipients receive GIS software, data, and curriculum materials. The grants help introduce 4-H youth to GIS technology, explore careers that use the technology, and conduct a local service project using GIS.

"The grant program has grown steadily as 4-H expands its focus to incorporate GIS technology into more of its activities," says Esther Worker, who manages youth group programs for Esri. "It provides 4-H Club members with access to professional GIS technology and the opportunity to apply that technology to local community service projects."

Through the increased use of GIS technology, 4-H youth across the United States are participating in GIS-related projects of importance to them. Club members in Iowa, Minnesota, and Kansas are partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service on local projects, while a club in Idaho is working with local emergency management officials to assist with an emergency preparedness plan.

World Topographic Map Includes OS OpenData Products

The Ordnance Survey's (OS) small- and midscale OS OpenData products have been included in Esri's World Topographic Map, the crowdsourced map at the foundation of Esri's Community Maps program. The map service can be accessed from the basemap gallery in ArcGIS Online.

The OS OpenData products incorporated into the World Topographic Map include information on roads, rivers, woodlands, administrative regions, built-up areas, and buildings representing a high level of detail. The added detail from OS OpenData significantly enhances the value and utility of geographic information for anyone working on mapping projects with British geography within the World Topographic Map.

Typically, when geospatial data holders release free data products, the information is only available in vector format that requires setup and processing before it can be used. By processing that raw information and integrating it into a map service in ArcGIS Online, Esri makes the data more accessible and convenient to include in applications and maps.

"I am very pleased Esri has incorporated OS OpenData into its World Topographic Map," commented Peter ter Haar, products director of Ordnance Survey. "OS OpenData allows users to download a wide range of mapping and geographic information for free reuse, and its inclusion will provide new opportunities for people to develop innovative applications and services."

The United Kingdom is the latest European country to contribute data to the World Topographic Map, joining the governments of the Czech Republic, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Esri Acquires SpotOn Systems

Esri will exhibit its location intelligence solution, at the Information OnDemand 2011 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 23-27. IBM's Information OnDemand conference is a global event that provides access and exposure to the full breadth of IBM Information Management technologies and experts.

Recently, Esri acquired SpotOn Systems, maker of products such as SpotOn Vantage Maps, to provide business intelligence solutions in addition to Esri Business Analyst. SpotOn brings interactive mapping to IBM Cognos business intelligence applications. . Esri High-Speed Geospatial Analytics Coming to IBM Netezza

Geospatial technology and spatial data types from Esri will soon be integrated into the IBM Netezza analytics appliances. This will give federal agencies and customers in industries such as energy, retail, telecommunications, and health care the capability to query and geospatially analyze enormous datasets at very fast speeds.

The new joint solution, scheduled for release in early 2012, will be demonstrated this week at the GEOINT 2011 Symposium in San Antonio, Texas. Visit IBM Netezza at booth 1007 to learn more and watch a demonstration. The solution will also be shown at IBM Information On Demand 2011, which will be held October 23–27 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

IBM Netezza's suite of analytics appliances combine storage, processing, a database, and an analytics engine into a single system. The appliances' high-performance data querying capabilities will be merged with Esri ArcGIS geospatial analysis, visualization, and geoprocessing tools. The IBM Netezza appliances will support spatial queries of massive datasets that previously were impractical or impossible to conduct.

ArcGIS will provide the visualization and deep geospatial analysis of the results. Esri and IBM Netezza customers will have the ability to geospatially analyze and view petabytes of data within minutes instead of days. In its upcoming ArcGIS 10.1 release, Esri will support IBM Netezza appliances through query layers. The two companies also are working closely on deeper product integration via the deployment of Esri's spatial data types within the IBM Netezza appliances.
