Petroleum Data Assistant for ArcGIS Desktop Released

Exprodat, the petroleum GIS services, software and training specialist has released Data Assistant, the latest addition to its Team-GIS suite of oil and gas software.

In any situation it is vital that all data is easily available and simple to use to ensure that the best possible decisions are made. This is especially true in oil and gas exploration, where the capital expenditure involved can be enormous.

Team-GIS Data Assistant provides exploration and production professionals with the tools they need to transfer data between commonly used oil and gas data formats and ArcGIS. Supported input formats include; Petrel, KINGDOM, SeisWorks, OpenWorks, Geographix, CPS3, IESX and UKOOA P1/90.

Once all of this data is transferred to the Esri environment, users are able to employ the powerful visualisation and spatial analysis capabilities that ArcGIS provides. Further, data can then be extracted from ArcGIS for further interpretation in dedicated sub-surface systems.

Exprodat’s Technical Director, Chris Jepps, explained more about the benefits of using the software; “Moving data from common E&P interpretation systems and ArcGIS has always proved a challenge. Team-GIS Data Assistant provides a pragmatic solution to this and has been designed with both the geoscientist and “GIS tech” in mind.

A simple wizard interface provides the geoscientist with an easy way to move data into ArcGIS in support of their workflows, while the more “GIS-centric” ArcToolbox and Python interfaces provide the geospatial specialist with powerful pre-, post- and batch processing capabilities. The first Data Assistant release focusses on integration between KINGDOM, Petrel, Landmark and ArcGIS, and we’ll be extending the tools with additional formats and data tools in future releases.”

Exprodat’s Team-GIS product suite is made up of a number of extensions to Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop that provide out-of-the-box functionality designed specifically for the needs of the petroleum sector.

Light Gray Canvas Map Released by Esri

Esri released a new global basemap service designed to highlight your data. The Light Gray Canvas map is now available at arcgis.com and ArcGIS Explorer Online.

The Light Gray Canvas map features an overall soft gray color for land and darker gray for oceans and other bodies of water. These shades provide a pleasing neutral background so that data overlays contrast sharply with the rest of the map. With fewer features and labels on the map, you have more freedom to color and label your own data. The map is a perfect alternative to traditional basemaps, which can have an abundance of detail that obscures data overlays. Any existing map backdrop can be changed to the Canvas map for a cleaner, less cluttered presentation of operational or custom data.

To start using the Light Gray Canvas map for your custom maps, visit arcgis.com.

VectorLock ArcGIS Extension For Shapefiles

In response to the ever present need to secure sensitive geospatial data, eMap International and Par Government are pleased to announce the release of VectorLock, the first security system for shapefiles. VectorLock is an ArcGIS 9.3 or 10 extension that enables organizations to protect geospatial data by controlling access across internal and external user communities and data sharing environments.

VectorLock employs a flexible, multi-tiered strategy to assure the highest level of security possible. Shapefile data is secured and distributed on a per user basis through a proprietary encrypted format that looks and feels like a normal shapefile when loaded inside ArcGIS. While the ability to create VectorLock files is available on a per seat basis for an annual fee, organizations that wish to secure their data can do it at no additional cost to their users, as the ArcGIS Toolbar is provided free of charge from eMap.

The VectorLock software suite consists of three integrated programs. The first is the License Server Administration Tool which manages an organization’s identity and regulates its VectorLock software licenses. The second is the Data Administrator Tool, a stand-alone program that creates VectorLock files and manages access with customized licenses for a specific length of time. The third and final program is the ArcMap Toolbar, which lies at the heart of VectorLock by allowing users to view, edit and work with VectorLock files using traditional GIS workflows.

General availability for VectorLock starts on June 13, 2011. Prospective customers can get more information at the VectorLock website.

Download Esri File Geodatabase API - Now Available

Esri just released the Esri File Geodatabase API. This API allows developers to work with file geodatabases outside ArcObjects (the library of software components that make up the foundation of ArcGIS). With this API, developers can now create independent applications to view or modify data stored in a file geodatabase. Geodatabases comprise the native structure for ArcGIS to store, manage, and use geospatial data. With the Esri File Geodatabase API, developers can now create independent applications to view or modify data stored in a file geodatabase without having to rely on ArcObjects.

The File Geodatabase API is a collection of C++ libraries (.dll) for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux platforms that allows direct access to data stored in a file geodatabase. The API allows developers to

Create new file geodatabases.
Read file geodatabase schema.
Create schemas for simple features.
Read, edit, and delete data in the file geodatabase.
Perform attribute and spatial queries.

The File Geodatabase API does not replace ArcObjects as the recommended approach to interacting with the geodatabase.

For more information and to download the API, go to esri.com/filegdbAPI.

High Resolution Printing Tool for ArcGIS Server

GeoNorth is pleased to announce the release of a powerful and convenient developer tool for ArcGIS Server which allows the printing of high resolution maps. Due to current limitations which prevent ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server web clients from exceeding 96 dpi image output, this tool is essential for GIS users who require high-end cartographic quality and the option to print larger sized maps from a web based mapping application.

Developers at GeoNorth have implemented this low-cost .NET solution that is designed to work with ArcGIS Server APIs. With this powerful new tool, users may now print exported pdf, jpg, and png maps at a resolution of up to 600 dpi. In addition to conveniently designing printable maps using standard ArcMap layout templates, users also have the ability to choose layers that will be displayed, add custom graphics and markups, and pass descriptive text such as map title, comments, etc.

While application interface development is needed to accept user input, implementation is quick using standard XML configuration. GeoNorth provides this technology in conjunction with development services for organization developing ArcGIS Server applications using the REST APIs.

ESRI ArcGIS at GeoWeb 2009

ESRI will demonstrate ArcGIS, a complete platform for sharing and analysing geospatial information on the Web, at the GeoWeb 2009 conference in Vancouver, Canada.

ArcGIS is a comprehensive platform for delivering geospatial information composed of vast amounts of geographic knowledge—data, models, analytic tools, maps, workflows, and metadata describing our world. This knowledge, created and maintained primarily by geographic information system (GIS) professionals, is increasingly being made available to everyday Web users and is playing a pivotal role in the decision-making process.

The GeoWeb makes geographic knowledge more available to people who don’t use geospatial technology on a daily basis but can benefit from it. ArcGIS, through the GeoWeb, allows everyone to leverage the billions of dollars already invested by governments and private organizations in developing basemaps, thematic datasets, and imagery. And, with ArcGIS, creators of geographic knowledge can maintain control over their authoritative data.
