GIS App: ArcGIS Explorer For Smartphone and Tablet

Esri released recently Explorer for ArcGIS, the GIS app for everyone to access and share maps on their smartphone and tablet. This app is characterized by being “for everyone”, with its modern, easy-to-use interface that allows non-GIS professionals to use it right away. Right now the release is available on iOS but an Android version will be available in the future.

Explorer for ArcGIS may require some familiarity with Esri GIS tools. For example, users can access any of their organization’s maps authored in ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS. These users are able to search for information about their assets, find out where their assets are in relation to their current location, and share that information easily with whomever they want to know the information. Maps can be shared several ways including text message, email and AirDrop and other methods.

Maps can be redlined in Explorer with the app’s sketching tool. There is also an interactive presentation feature in Explorer for ArcGIS that makes it possible for users to brief stakeholders by using map slides which contain a title, visible layers in sets, and an extent. During a presentation, users can interact with a live map and also view pop-up windows and sketch.

To download Explorer for ArcGIS, visit the Apple App Store. All you need is an iOS device to download and try the sample maps included in the Explorer app.

Medicare Mapper Free iPad App Now Available

Demonstrating how location analytics can use big data, Critigen LLC along with partners Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., and Esri, has developed an informative Medicare application called Medicare Mapper.  Just released in the Apple App Store, it is a free download for the iPad.  Based on a publicly available data set from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the application allows consumers to see where people in their area are going for Medicare services, and service providers to see where their patients live along with the relative amount of services they received.  It quickly and easily illustrates geographic patterns in Medicare hospital inpatient expenditures and exemplifies the power of location analytics for healthcare.

Based on the 2011 version of the Hospital Service Area file, the application makes anonymous data available on health services, service providers, utilization, and costs in an intuitive tablet interface.  A total of 990,455 records, represented by a string of numbers, were decoded and geo-enabled with help from the U.S. Census Bureau’s ZIP code file and population data from Esri.  It describes every Medicare Hospital Inpatient Admission that occurred in the country in 2011.  Included is the residency (ZIP code) of the beneficiary, the hospital provider that received the reimbursement, the total amount of the reimbursement, the total length of stay, and the total number of cases that originated from within the respective ZIP code.  Using the totals described by the data, two more categories of data were averaged and included for each record.

Users can select a specific hospital and display its impact in terms of which ZIP codes their 2011 Medicare beneficiaries came from.  If a ZIP code is selected, pins appear on the map to show what facilities were used by the beneficiaries living there.  Another built-in capability compares two hospitals or two ZIP codes in a side-by-side manner.  The differences of each category can then be viewed numerically or by percentage.  These capabilities enable users to build the stories they need to produce understanding, build knowledge, research, or manage.

Medicare Mapper follows the 2012 release of Critigen’s Health Indicators app as an example of using our geospatial technology and mobile expertise to make health data accessible to everyone.  We hope it inspires the health community to embrace the potential of geographic information to improve the way we invest in healthcare, prevention, and infrastructure. We also hope it enables executives, citizens, and health professionals to create the stories they need to enable change.

OGC Student Map App Challenge 2013 Sponsored By Google

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) announces the OGC Student Map App Challenge, sponsored by Google, an OGC Principal Member. The Student Map App Challenge is a contest for students who have programming skills and an interest in maps and location services.

Open standards from the OGC unlock the potential of the "spatial Web," creating opportunities for app developers to make all kinds of location information available to users, independent of platform. The OGC has launched the Student Map App Challenge to make entrepreneurial students aware of the enormous social and commercial potential of these open standards.

Three winning applicants will receive an OGC Student Map App Challenge Award and the opportunity to have their apps featured on the OGC website and in other media channels. The first place winner will:

    - Receive the award at their choice of the next year's OGC Technical Committee meetings (http://www.opengeospatial.org/event?category=ogctcpc), held quarterly in cities around the world. OGC will pay for travel, accommodations and meals.

   - Receive a Nexus Tablet donated by Google.

   - Receive a two-year OGC membership for the student's academic institution

   - Have a dedicated award page on the OGC website and be cited in an OGC press release.

Applicants and their apps will receive the attention of the OGC's 480 public sector and private sector members – government organizations, NGOs, corporations and universities around the world.

Apps can make use of hundreds of public and private sector map data sources that are accessible through server-side implementations of OGC standards. These include weather, navigation, demographics, sensors, webcams, commercial establishments, hydrology, bird counts, accident statistics and many other kinds of data. The OGC Student Map App Challenge page provides search tools that can be used to find these existing OGC service instances. Most of these have no restrictions or few restrictions on their use, and thus they provide countless opportunities for mapping apps and location service apps.

Students don't need to rely on others' data, however. Sources of spatial data that are not now accessible through OGC's open interfaces and encodings can be made accessible by students who develop server interfaces as well as client apps.

Students must register by 15 June 2013 and submit their apps by 15 July 2013. Contestants and the public will be notified of the results on 30 August 2013.

The OGC is an international consortium of more than 480 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled. Visit the Student Map App Challenge page for details.

GeoJot App Makes iPhone, iPad 2 Camera Field Data Collection Tool

Has anyone of you already tried the GeoJot mobile app? According to the app description, it could make your iPhone or iPad 2 camera into a photo-based field data collection tool.

GeoJot geotags your photos with more accurate GPS coordinates and allows you to jot down attribute data associated with each photo such as name, condition, value, etc.. GeoJot is a companion app created for use with GPS-Photo Link, photo mapping software for the PC. Use GPS-Photo Link desktop software to extract attribute information with the geotagged photos - create printed reports, Shape Files and GeoDatabases, KML, KMZ files, watermarked photos, and more.

Professionals use geotagging to do real property audits, damage assessments, compliance documentation and more. GeoJot makes it easy to coordinate large geotagging projects. A field manager sets up the attribute lists and then shares the attribute list with the team in the field for consistent data collection. Team members take photos recording position and attribute data using predetermined attributes. Team members send data in via email or download to a central location for processing with GPS-Photo Link. Your company now has photos on maps with attributes ready for analysis, reports, presentations and more.

GeoJot features:

- Automatically record more accurate GPS coordinates with each photo increasing the accuracy from about 60ft up to 15 ft.

- GPS Lock feature allows you to capture the location of the object instead of the photographer

- See Lat/Lon, Elevation, and GPS accuracy while taking photos.

- Collect up to 24 attributes for each photo. Once you have created the attribute fields, you can create a drop down lists of values or type in values in the field.

- Select an attribute list for a group of photos. Each time you take a photo, GeoJot prompts you to select values for the attributes in that list.

- Manage attribute lists creating different lists for each of your geotagging projects.

- Share attribute lists between devices for consistent data collection from your team in the field.

- View a summary of attributes collected in the camera roll through the Photo List View. See a thumbnail of each photo captured along with the date, time and attributes associated with the photo.

Ice Dataset on CryoSat App for iPad and iPhone

Discover ESA’s ice mission, track it in real time and obtain the latest measurements with the new CryoSat app for iPhone and iPad. CryoSat is measuring the thickness of polar sea ice and monitoring changes in the ice sheets that blanket Greenland and Antarctica.

The CryoSat iPhone and iPad application – or CryoSatApp – is now available at Apple's App Store.

CryoSatApp’s main menu provides access to four sections: mission description, a 3D model of the satellite, position tracking and data visualisation.

In the first section, users can easily find information on the CryoSat mission, including images, videos, archived news and an overview of how CryoSat obtains and delivers data.

The 3D model feature allows users to zoom in on how the satellite is built and discover its instruments – such as the radar altimeter for measuring ice thickness.

Information on CryoSat’s current position is automatically updated, including its visibility over selected ground stations. Users can also track the satellite’s position in relation to the iPhone or iPad’s geographical location.

But it’s the data feature that makes this app unique. Not only does it give access to all of CryoSat’s measurements, it can help you visualise the ice sheets by providing a vertical profile over the area.

All geophysical parameters stored in the CryoSat products can be easily displayed at the touch of your fingertips as soon as they are generated on the ground. Users can select the day and orbit from which they want to extract the data, and view Earth’s ice profile from that orbit.

This is a remarkable tool for students and scientists engaged in using CryoSat products.

ESA has a new Earth Observation Data Policy, which allows for free and open access to satellite data.

Since its launch in April 2010, CryoSat-2 has been collecting data to improve our understanding of the relationship between ice and climate.

In June 2011, the first map of Arctic sea-ice thickness was unveiled. The satellite will continue to monitor the changing ice for years to come.

Best Free GIS Apps for iPad and iPhone

I own an iPad and have been downloading free GIS apps. There are not so many GIS apps available, to be honest. Most of those I encountered were from ESRI.

Here are free GIS application that may be worth downloading unto your iPad (and in some cases, iPhone).

1. ArcGIS - ESRI App
ArcGIS is a great way to discover and use maps. Maps come to life in ArcGIS. Tap on the map or use your current location and discover information about what you see. You can query the map, search and find interesting information, measure distances and areas of interest and share maps with others. Find community hosted maps from ArcGIS Online – ESRI’s online GIS. Alternatively you can use the authoring tools on ArcGIS.com to create your own maps that can be used in ArcGIS.

If you are an existing ESRI customer this application is part of your ArcGIS system. You can share your corporate maps and extend the reach of your GIS to your iOS devices within your enterprise using ArcGIS Server.

2. UC 2011 App
It is based on Esri International User Conference (Esri UC) in San Diego. If you like Google Earth on your desktop, you will love Earthscape in your palm.

The entire United States can be viewed in detail, usually comparable or slightly better than current desktop solutions. Imagery outside of the United States is currently limited to 15 meter resolution -- enough to discern major roads, but not houses. As we acquire the rights to use more detailed international imagery, it will be provided to Earthscape users as a free upgrade.
